Hi, You will need to take to mitsubishi dealer and have them scan your diagnostics. But this is a common thing in montero's and it sounds like o ring (which is plastic) in transfer case has busted. As long as it switches in and out of 4 wheel drive it is ok to drive. If it doesn't, dont drive it...it could cause alot of damage.

Or it is a sensor under the air breather. Also make sure you put your montero in 4 wheel drive once a month to keep the sensors working.

4x4 does not engage the dash switch selector does not light up

Does the vehicle in gage into 4 wheel drive at all? You can tell by putting it in 4 wheel drive and see how it moves. You can feel the difference. Also it does sounds like a short somewhere in the wiring under the dash

There is an electric motor that engages drive.  Mine was stuck and a mechanic beat it w a hammer while I was in vehicle w brake on in drive pushing the diff 4wd buttons.  It freed up and started working fine!!  It looks like a small starter under car on passenger side. Or buy one on ebay  for cheap and replace it

Four wheel drive switch on dash (electric)

Push the "2 hi" switch while you're driving it.

You can do this while you're driving, as these systems have "shift on the fly".

You will hear / feel a "clunk" when the system disengages, and you will see the "2 hi" light come back on..

4 wheel drive wont swich back to 2 wheel drive

For a temporary fix so the car can drive, remove the fuse for the four wheel drive. it won't actuate the four wheel. The car is always in 2wheel drive. the fuse is located under the hood, the very right side of the of the fuse box, the third fuse up from the bottom. This can be checked in the owners manual. When I need four wheel dr I place the fuse back in. I haven't fixed the problem yet but can drive it 2wheel on the road. think it is the control module for the four wheel dr located under the dash board behind the glove box. Dealer part for $450, I would rather install and remove a 10cent fuse
