CAN'T GET CAR IN GEAR

I have a 1994 1.9L Manual ford escort. When I stopped at a sign I had the clutch & brake down, when I took my foot off the break the car moved as if I had the clutch up. Then I had trouble getting out ofgear, then in gear. On the way home everything was fine. The next day I could not get into gear when the engine is running. The fluid level is at max level.Where do I start. Thank You

Thank You everyone who sent in info. Useing that info I was able to trace my problem to the master cylnder. If anyone else has this problem it is located below the brake master cylnder(must remove battery to see it)& is supplied with brake fluid from it.

Sounds like the clutch is on its way out or needs adjustment. If you've noticed a burning smell when shifting just prior to your problem, this is a good indication of a failing clutch. If no burning is present, it may be that the clutch pedal needs adjustment.

Likely the clutch master cylinder is internally bypassing and allowing the clutch to release while you have your foot down and haven't done that yet. Change the master and bleed the system and you should be fine,

My clutch is going straight to the floor and car wont go into gear

But check in see if it's just the ball joints first that's a easy fix compared to replacing the whole clutch I have a 1999 Ford escort manual and just had this problem I know all I need to know about this car make and model trust me it's your clutch nothing else You are soon to run into belt problems too keep an eye on that

Kia Rio 2005 manual, the gear will get stuck and car shakes and stalls on its own when I come to a stop, foot on clutch and brake, in reverse and first gear.

what would happen if you put it in first gear, put your foot on the clutch then try to start the car....of course pick a place where safe!!!...if it rolls forward while cranking ,the clutch plate is touching the flywheel (in other words the clutch all the way down while in gear while cranking, should NOT touch the flywheel(transmission part that makes the car move) so if it moves then it shows the transmission reacts to the clutch touching the other jiggamathig. Possibly clutch system needs bleeding (air in the hydraulic system). I'm sure your car has this thing called a "clutch slave cylinder". Now,this is one thing I would check first.

Have 2001 ford escort zx2 When u try to put it in gear its hard to and the clutch stays down to the ground Have to pick up clutch wit foot and than car stalls How do u ck transmission fluid-standard

Hi, the problem is air in the hydraulic clutch. Check the brake fluid reservoir--it's just in front of the driver under the hood. If low, top it up and check for leaks. Usually, the problem is a leaky slave cylinder at the transmission. If you find this to be the case and would like to replace it yourself, please get back to me for instructions. Below is a picture of the slave cylinder.

Break goes down lower then normal but the breaks stop the car , my break light came on last week but i added break fluid and then my break light went off then it was ok but i could not start my car becouse...

I it is usually the brake shoe adjusters at the rear.

Auto adjust type:
To adjust them you can hold your foot hard down on the brake pedal and wrech up the park brake lever a few times

Manual adjust
Drums off and wind the adjuster cog to increase the diametre of the shoes, don't get carried away thow or the drum wont go back on

I have and ford escort 1998 i have no idea whats wrong with it at first when you drived the car,you stop at a stop sign and when you go it works fine but it wont shift into gear. it just keeps running.i...

Had same issue today: as soon as I'd hit a stop sign or just stop it would go like it was on Neutral even though it was in Drive... I though it was the whole transsmition and was resigned to change it completely ($$$) but I took it to an honest mechanic and told me that the 1997 escorts need to be checked on with the hand brake and on Drive (make sure the brake is all the way up) it was missing like almost 1.5 ltrs of Trans. fluid =/ told me to add 1 ltr and to see if it'd stop... it did =D spent not 10 dlrs fixing it... ohh but my transmission fluid was pink going a lil brown sorry to say, you should have it changed along with the filter

Manual transmission will not shift into any gear, even when the clutch is completely depressed. It's a hard shift to begin with and now when i have to come to a stop and say move it out of 4th gear and try...

The problem sounds like the clutch. If you put it in 1st., then start it up, does it try to move with you foot on the clutch? Does the clutch pedal feel different than normal.
