The problem is more than likely not the oil pump. If the oil pump is bad, your engine would probably be making a knocking sound as if it's going to break apart. 1st change your oil and filter. If that doesn't solve the issue, replace the oil pressure switch, it could be clogged. If your problem still exists, remove the oil pan and see if the oil pump screen is clogged.

Why not answer some simple questions:

  1. what oil, type, 0w?
  2. how old is that OIL is it, 3 years, 25,000 miles> what?
  3. do you change oil often -3-7k (3k is best on high mileage engines)
  4. what mileage on the engine, 100k, 300k ,500k? what?
  5. drops to zero using a real shop test gauge? do say what?
  6. with one valve cover off is engine full of sludge?
  7. the pump screen will be packed with #6 true. starving pump.
  8. bearing clearances, all wrong will not be cured with any new pump.
  9. what is cold cranking pressure using a REAL hand shop gauge. nice and high?

I'd be checking to make sure that the oil pump was not the problem before I tried to replace it.
How many KM/miles on the engine?
Regular maintenance?
Burning oil?

The oil pressure gauge drops to zero when i slow down

Have a mechanical gauge hooked up to see that the oil pressure is good or not. If you have no or low at an idle, it can be due to bad oil pump, or worn out bearings.

Oil pressure goes to zero when stopping and cornering. starting to leak a little oil when warm

your oil pump could be possibly going bad, I would do a oil change and use a high mileage oil and see if it fixes the problem, It is normal for the oil gauge to move but not good if it goes to zero.

Oil gauge fluctuates back and forth. sometimes

You'll need to determine if the oil pressure is actually changing, or if the sending unit or gauge is lying to you. Be certain the oil level is up to normal, then check the actual oil pressure with a test gauge. If the pressure varies (drops) at engine idle, perhaps your pressure bypass is defective, or perhaps the oil pump is worn. Testing with a known good pressure gauge should lead you in the right direction.

Oil pressure gauge reads normal when first starts. as it warms up, gauge goes to zero. If I rev engine, gauge goes back to normal.

Two things...when it reads zero, is there any engine noise (tapping or knocking)? After you rev the engine does the pressure read normal at idle and function normally, or does it go back down? Either way, you should not drive the vehicle 'till you have a mechanical gauge (yours is electro-mechanical) put on there and the actual pressure is tested. The condition may be a bad sending unit, a bad bearing or possible obstructed oil pump screen. The repair is obviously different for each one and the price is as well.

I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4 L) with 225,000 miles. When idling and engine hot, oil pressure guage drops to zero. Any way to tell if it is the pressure sensing unit or not?

ook up a external pressure guage where the sending unit is you will know forsure. with the milage i would guess that the oil pump may be the prblem or to much clearance in yhe bearing.
