Get another battery test battery voltage should be 12v start your engine test again should read 14v any figure above 14v is dangerous note some batteries has negative effect on alternator output.

sounds like the voltage regulator is not working, at the terminals you tested voltage should be above 13.6,also make sure you have good grounds, these should be tested with an ohm meter, meter should read zero,no resistance, if you need more help get back to me and we'll do some other tests, please rate my fix as i strive to be the best

Try another multi-meter or change the settings... 12V alternators cannot produce 48V.

SOURCE: 2006 Ford Tarus Over Charging from Alternator

Could be a pinched wire that did not show up when new. May have worked thin over the years.... Though to locate at times..... Bulk head headers can be a culprit, any where a wire passes through or over metal parts. Check for corrosion near battery terminals and alternator as a corroded connector can be "seen" as a resistance to the alternator and it will output more amps to compensate.....

2003 Saturn vue awd 3.0 testing showed alternator putting out about 1/2- we replaced the alternator & the serpentine belt,- red wire?the new alternator in did not solve the problem-battery is new-

How do you know it's only putting out about 1/2 ? an 1/2 what ? Amps or volts ? Did you hook up a volt meter to the battery posts ? red to red an black lead to negative post of the battery ? Does it show 13.1 to 14. 1 volts with the engine running , if so it's charging . The only thing that would cause the alternator not to put out full charge amps would be a bad diode inside the alternator or a power or ground issue. You need to check power an grounds doing a voltage drop test . Voltage Drop Testing the Charging System

Just put a new alternator on a 93 Chevy Silverado. Keeps blowing a fuse and will not charge

Check wiring integrity and clean connections. While running, check alternator output voltage from terminal on back of alternator to any suitable ground on engine or neg. battery terminal. Should not read over 14.2 volts. If over that or fluctuating more than.5 volts, bad alternator, return as defective.

Voltage spikes and dips

Sounds like the ground strap is loose, damaged, corroded or missing.

The regulated alternator puts out 13.8 volts. 14 volts is not a spike; it is normal. If your idle is not steady, the voltage will flucuate around the numbers you are reading.

Install a ground strap from the engine to the chassis, even if the dealer doesn't want to...

hope this helps...

Alternator problem

Comp systems will run on 10 volts, so I don't think that's the problem. I'd check all cables and connectors pertaining to positive and ground and go from there....accordianman

Alternator not charging

Hi

If you have a volt meter, set it to volts and hold the negative probe to the alternator body and the positive to the battery positive. If you don't get battery voltage then the alternator isn't grounded and the probable cause is the main engine ground cable either breaking or coming loose.
