Sounds like a problem with the car not getting sufficient battery voltage, which could be caused by a number of reasons. A likely reason is a bad wire(s) and/or a bad connection at the power or ground connections. I've heard of vehicles doing the same thing when the ECU (engine computer) dies.
It's best to narrow out power as the problem, first. Do you have a voltmeter or multimeter to check the battery voltage? It should be reading at least 12 volts with the engine off. Even a new battery can have problems, so start there first.
For some reason the battery voltage dropped below what it takes to start. Charge battery and it should start in my experience the lights r because of not starting and the voltage
Hi Gene:
I'd suggest trying to start from the beginning with this.
Try disconnectinf the battery and charging it fully.
When you re-connect it, the "service engine light" may not be on . that would be nice. If there is a problem the light will come back on. Make sure the gas cap is screwed on tight.
The battery not holding a charge is ypically a separate problem from the service engine light.
Year make and model ? On some cars the brake warning light and battery warning light are on the same circuit. A problem with either system will turn both lights on. The check engine light means there are trouble codes in the computer that need to be retrieved to assist in troubleshooting the problem.
actually the battery can have a dead cell and the lights will work ok and not even blink or dim when attempting to start, but not enough juice to turn over an engine. does it click when you try to start? could be a bad connection (cable, cable ends, solenoid, or even starter armature problem). your local auto parts store can check the battery and starter off the car if you carry it to them - free of charge.
