2001 Camry 5 speed. It starts but it will not move. I can change gears without pushing in clutch. One mechanic said it was clutch and a different one said transmission is out. Which is it?

This was an all of a sudden thing. No grinding gears, sputtering, or missing. Just got new battery day before went for a drive and felt like engine was revving up. Stopped at stop sign and when I put it in 1st clutch went to the floor and gear would not engage.

The clutch is not transferring power to the gearbox, which then is not turning, so that you can select gears without the clutch.Possibilities are
- clutch assembly has failed, possibly by the splined driven plate hub coming adrift
- clutch driven plate has become very worn and has lost contact
- slave cylinder has stuck through corrosion (assuming a hydraulic clutch) and is holding out the clutch independent of the pedal. This can be determined by watching it while someone depresses and raises the pedal.

I think it is unlikely the transmission input shaft has fractured.

2000 VW Cabrio 5 speed manual. I had an emergency stop and used engine braking. Now I only have 1st and 2nd gear. I lost 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse. How do I fix or check linkage?

Question edited for clarity. Funky one space then punctuation :>D
Question moved to sub category.

Check out the videos on servicing the gear linkage. It contains plastic connectors. Personally, I would give a local transmission specialist the job.

2001 audi quattro tt manual transmission starts in gear no clutch won't go forward

You have a worn out clutch disc so the transmission still has to come out to change it.

I have a 99 ford ranger 5 speed and my gear shift freely moves without pushing the clutch. What will cause that to happen

If the gear shift moves freely and the transmission is turning, I would say the shift lever is not connected to anything, or something inside the trans is broke.
If the trans is not turning, something happened to the clutch.

Reverse works now after being fixed, but now wont go past second gear

is the gearchange change connected correctly ,its on a spline underneath and as you move the gear stick this moves the gear selector rod on the gearbox ,you can soon tell as you can select the gears without engine running or the clutch pushed down

Bit of a crunch changing down into third, can i do anything easy to help it?

If this is a manual transmission, check the clutch free play which should not be much more than about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If ok, then you may need to replace the third gear synchromesh mechanism within the transmission. This entails a tear down of the transmission, so it would not be classified as an easy fix. Hope this helps!

2003 toyota mr2 spyder 5 speed transmission grinding noise

Here is what is going on. When you push in the clutch pedal you remove the connection between the engine and the transmission. At this time all the parts in the transmission stop rotating.Since the only parts in the transmission that can rotate without moving the car are the input parts we can safely assume that the noise can only be from there. This can be a transmission input bearing. Worn Synchro mechanism (allows the transmission to shift without grinding the gears)Low fluid in the tranny. Or a bad clutch component. Top off or change the fluid. If it still makes the noise you need to take it to a tranny shop.

Gearbox or clutch problem

i guessed the rod that shifts the gear snapped. you said you can move the stick shift through all the gears without the use of the clutch. that is supposed to be impossible unless you are just holding the other end of the stick and the other end at the gear is not moving.

i am pretty sure you are for big bucks....

tnx 4 using fixya,

I have a 1989 camry the tramsmission was starting to slip on occassion in drive and reverse. While driving down the street without any warning I lost drive and reverse completely. Is there a vacuume pump...

Hi. It is not over for the transmission. But it is for the clutch system inside. Yes, the automatic transmissions got clutch(es) inside as well, they just work with the principle of centrifugal force. Once 1st gear reaches max rev, 2nd gear engages due to the mechanical energy generated inside, so forth and so on, ergo moving gears back and forth depending on speed. The trans repair costs for this camry should be around $500-$800 plus the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). This repair, plus the adequate ATF, most preferably toyota ATF, will give your transmission life another 120,000 miles when 30,000 mile checks are made on time. Hope this will help.
