Hi James:
Don't know if there's a really formal way, but here's what I've always done:
- 4 "corners" closest to the crank. Gently progressively snug them to lift the pan squarely against the block.
- all the rest - turn in until they barely touch the pan, then gently snug them to about how the first four were. THEN, starting at the centre, tighten out to the ends, one end at a time.
- I'm pretty sure there may be at least a dozen different people who may do it slightly differently, but THE MOST IMPORTANT PART (except for not forgetting the gasket) is to get it SQUARE to the block to start with.

When does the oil pan gasket need to be replaced ?

Check this Oil Pan Removal & Installation...

2.0L & 2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4. Remove the engine drive belt.
  5. On the 2.0L engine, remove the intercooler pump bracket bolts from the oil pan.
  6. Remove the lower A/C compressor bolt from the oil pan.
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  8. Remove the oil pan.
To install:
  1. Make sure that the oil pan and mounting surface on the lower crankcase are free of all oil and debris.

  1. Apply a 2 mm bead of GM P/N 123785251 (Canadian P/N 88901148) around the perimeter of the oil pan and the oil suction port opening. Do not over apply the RTV. More than a 2 mm bead is not required.
  2. Install the oil pan.

  1. Install the oil pan bolts in sequence. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2. Install the A/C compressor bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. On the 2.0L engine, install the intercooler pump bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4. Install the engine drive belt.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Fill the engine oil to the proper level.

I am replacing the oil pan gasket and the bolt diagram doesnt match the gasket we are putting on the car. I need the tightening order for the 2000 ford taurus lx with ohv. please and thanks!

OKAY LOOKING AT OIL PAN FACING SHALLOW END LEFT SIDE STUDS BOLTS SEQUENCE 13 12 11 10 9 BACK BOLTS 8 7 6 5 OKAY 5 BOLTS WILL BE ONE OF THE RIGHT SIDE STUDS STARTING AT 5 BACK STUD THEN BOLT 4 3 2 1 AND FRONT BOLTS ON FRONT OF PAN AFTER 1 BOLT 15 AND BOLT 14. SEE FRONT BOLTS ON FRONT END OF OIL PAN 14 15 AND 1. WRITE NUMBERS DOWN IN THE SEQUENCE I GAVE YOU ON PAPER. DRAW OIL PAN ROUGH DRAFT PUT THE NUMBERS I GAVE YOU I SAME SEQUENCE THATS YOUR OIL PAN BOLTS SEQUENCE.

  1. Use a new oil pan gasket. Tighten the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2. Tighten the pan-to-transmission bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  3. Tighten the access cover bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Tighten the compressor bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Refill the engine with oil.
  6. Install the transfer case.

I need to replace the oil pan gasket on a 03 dodge ran 1500 2x4 with the 4.7 do I just unscrew it and take the gasket out put the new one in and screw it back together or is there more

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Attach an engine crane.
  4. Loosen, but don-t remove, the left and right mount through-bolts.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Structural cover Front crossmember
  6. Raise the engine just enough for clearance.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE Don-t pry on the pan. The gasket is integral with the windage tray, and doesn-t come out with the pan.
    NOTE The double ended studs must be installed in their original locations.
    Pan bolts and studs Pan
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Oil pan gasket Oil pan. Tighten the bolts, in sequence, to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Front crossmember Structural cover Negative battery cable
  2. Fill the crankcase to the proper level with engine oil.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.

How can i remove the oil pan gasket?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery.
2.2L, 2.3L and 2.7L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  4. Install the drain bolt with a new gasket. Tighten the bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  5. Remove the front wheels and the splash shield.
  6. Remove the center beam.

  1. Detach the Oxygen sensor (O 2 S) electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolts from the support bracket on the exhaust pipe.
  3. Remove the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.
  4. Remove the exhaust pipe and discard the gaskets.
  5. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the converter cover.
  6. If equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the clutch cover.
  7. Remove the oil pan nuts and bolts (in a criss-cross pattern) and the oil pan; if necessary, use a mallet to tap the corners of the oil pan. DO NOT pry on the pan to get it loose.
  8. Clean the oil pan mounting surface of old gasket material and engine oil.
To install:
  1. Install a new oil pan gasket to the oil pan. Apply liquid gasket to the corners of the curved section of the gasket.
  2. Install the oil pan to the engine.
  3. Install the oil pan nuts and bolts and tighten the nuts and bolts in sequence. Tighten the nuts and bolts in 2 steps to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the torque converter cover. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  5. If equipped with a manual transaxle, install the clutch cover. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6. Install the exhaust pipe with new gaskets and new locknuts. Tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the manifold to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)and tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm). Install the bolts to the exhaust pipe support bracket and tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  7. Attach the Oxygen sensor (O 2 S) electrical connector.
  8. Install the center beam and tighten the mounting bolts as follows:

    Prelude: 43 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) Accord: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  9. Install the splash shield and tighten the mounting bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10. Install the front wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle and fill the engine with oil.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.

3.0L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the engine undercover.
  4. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain plug.
  5. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  6. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts.
  7. Hammer a seal cutter between the engine block and oil pan to break the seal.
  8. Remove the oil pan.
To install:
  1. Clean the oil pan flange and engine block mounting surface.
  2. Apply sealant to the oil pan flange. Be sure to apply sealant toward the inside of the bolt holes.
  3. Install the oil pan on the engine. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 8.7 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4. Install the exhaust pipe.
  5. Install the undercover.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
WARNING Operating the engine without the proper amount and type of engine oil will result in severe engine damage.
  1. Refill the engine with the correct amount of oil.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

  1. Apply a 0.13 inch (3.5mm) bead of the GM P/N 12378521 sealant around the perimeter of the oil pan and oil suction port opening.
  2. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
