The brake light bulbs on my 2003 beetle 1.9tdi are fine but wont come on when the pedal is pressed. If i remove the offside bulb and put it back, it comes on until the ignition is turned over then goes out...

There's a brake light switch down on the top of your brake pedal. This switch actuates when you step on the pedal. If it goes bad you have brake lights all the time, or not at all.

Here's some instructions and photos (the instructions may be ridiculously offensive to some)

Brake lights went out, changed bulbs, checked fuse, still wont work

You have to check the brake light switch which should be around the brake pedal on the upperside.
Ones located rremove the wires tht go to the switch and jump them by using a piece of wire, thn check if the brake lights come 'on'. If they do , thn its the switch tht may need replacing or even sometimes adjusting inorder to operate.
Hope this helps.

No backup lights. Bulbs are all fine, fuses also.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Additionally check the reverse switch and its wiring/connectors. The reverse switch is located at the transmission. This is also part of the neutral start switch assembly. This page would give you additional insight.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Pls be informed that due to my current rank and rating, even a Helpful wouldbe detrimental to my status. Should this solution not address yourconcern, it would be appreciated if you could just not rate it at all. Cheers.
