Take out #1 plug if possible. put straw or something similar in plug hole on top of piston, put a wrench on crankshaft pulley nut and rotate engine. when piston gets to the top it should be on tdc. and rotor pointing to #1 wire on distributor cap. replace plug and adjust dist, if piston is on top, and dist, is off. pull dist so the rotor button points to #1. GOD-bless! OR YOU CAN ALSO ALIGN THE TDC MARK ON CRANKSHAFT DAMPER.

My !978 chevy pickup has new distributor and carburator. I can hear it firng but it won't start

gyver here , twenty year wrencher.. sounds like either you got the timing out on the distributor , or the timing on the crank and cam are off. if you know the timing marks were set cam at twelve crank at six the dist is out. common for guys to set cam and crank n marks one above the other but then you must rotate engine 360 degree before you set dist back into hole. pull dist up rotate 180 degree .let me know

I took my distributor out to replace the heads forgot to mark it. I reinstalled engine was hard to start but would start but rough I took dist. out thinking I was 180 out reinstalled turned over great but...

What you need to do is take the distributor out and by hand turn the engine so that Cylinder #1 is at TDC on the Ignition cycle. YOu can determine this by watching the valve rockers. Once the Exhaust valve has opened and closed, the intake valve should open and close. At that point watch the crank balancer for the "timing" marks to line up. Then install the distributor with the cap OFF, watching the rotor. It will rotate as you lower the distributor so you will have to rotate the dist shaft the right amount before you try to put it in so the rotor will point to #1 on the cap when it is all the way in.

My car turning over but not starting up . had just put lifters in it and i did pull the distributor and i plowed #1 brung it up TDC andset it down were my rotor pointing at #1 witch is in the front on the...

When you brought the #1 to TDC, was it compression stroke? Might it have been exhaust stroke? If yes, go back to TDC and rotor at #1, then pull dist, rotate engine 360, and reinstall dist.

Need to know what position the dist. sits inside the engine.what angle does the vacume port face

as long as u install dist. with room to turn or adjust timing, it doesnt matter. install dist have some crank engine with cap off. watch which direction rotor turns. then start firing order with no. 1 wire at rotor and work around cap in the direction of dist rotation

1997 chevy c 10 truck wont start and back firing just put in new distributor It died this morning had to be towed home what is wrong ???

You should begin by static timing it. Mark #1 location at distributor on engine or something you can refer to later. Remove Dist. cap make sure the distributor rotor is rotating when engine cranks, If it does not the timing chain broke. If it rotates:
1. pull #1 plug, place thumb over plug hole and rotate balancer with socket wrench till it blows your finger off hole. This is #1 TDC compression stroke.
2. look at distributor rotor--it should be pointing at #1 location mark you made earlier if it is you have a spark issue.
3. If it is not pointing to #1 you remove Dist. hold down bolt under Dist. and carefully pull the dist. up while rotating rotor.
4. You will need to advance the dist. a few teeth past#1 (rotating Rotor) then re-install dist. if it doesn't line up to #1 keep repeating step 4 till it does. After you get it right you should be good to go. A timing gun will be needed after to clock in the timing after installing the distributor.
Good luck!!!

Engine won't start

even if you have spark, it may not be "good spark"

Try cleaning the contacts to the coil, or replace the coil itself.

May have pinched or cut a wire by mistake during the work you have done. Check all for proper grounding as well
