I understand you have maintained it properly, But often people seem to forget things like the Fuel filter. Another cause is vacuum leaks. If the car has a miss you might try a can of Seafoam through the fuel system. Cleans the system very nicely and improves fuel mileage. Hope this helps to return the Subbie to its dependable abilities. Good luck.

I had a similar problem on my 2002 Impreza RS 2.5 (same engine and engine control system). In my case it was the O2 sensor on the intake manifold. This happened at 34,xxx mi. so it was covered by the warranty. Replacing the part is very easy. (two bolts and a wiring harness). Obviously I would start simple and cheap and work your way to expensive and difficult.
From my understanding its all caused from the engine missfiring. If its been a while or never, I'd change the spark plugs first. (stick with the Subaru Parts plugs, I went after market and the dealer claimed the plugs were not the correct "temperature" and had to pay for the new plugs and install although they did it without my permition. Thats a whole nother story).
Could also be the manifold pressure sensor.
Either 02 or manifold pressure sensor may cause intermitent check engine light.
Where I live Brookline,MA , Autozone will run a free diagnostic on your car by hooking up to your ECU and will give you the trouble codes and possible remidies. Of course there are no guarentee's but it will point you in the right direction.
Good Luck

you may need to replace the sensor or relay for the transmission. about the brakes, try checking the disc pads, it may be too thin, have it replaced

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"

Hi If the car runs fine while driving and cuts off ONLY when you are idling (foot completely off the gas pedal and RPM's at idle speed) then your idle air control valve my need adjusting or need to be replaced, or idle air passage make have been blocked off by excessive carbon build-up. If build-up is the problem, a good removal and cleaning will do the trick or an off the shelf spray cleaner may get the job done as well.
It could also be clogged fuel injection system. Try a fuel treatment with a full tank of gas. For an older model it could be the lock-up solenoid on the transmission. Or it could be a stopped up catalytic converter on about any make and model.
First thing is check and change the fuel filter, it's usually checked by blowing air through it (in the arrow direction) if no air flows through or it blows through slowly then it's more than likely plugged change it and go from there. Sometimes after all avenues have been followed and the problem still exists i have seen the sock on the fuel pump be plugged and do the same. it will run great while accelerating but stall at idle due to not enough fuel pressure.
It could be a problem with the car not getting enough fuel, or it may have something to do with one or more of the sensors, such as the Mass Airflow Sensor. Is your check engine light on? If it is then its most likely a faulty or dirty sensor.
Please check the EGR valve to see if it is stuck open with a chunk of carbon. This will cause an internal vacuum leak and the car will not idle. To test the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas recirculation) pulls it off and tries to blow thru it. Also look to see if the EGR pintle is seated.
Please get back to us if you have further query or else please accept this "particular" solution.
