Because transmission is f--- up. Get rid of the car. You can get another car for the price that will cost to rebuild the tranny. Its very expensive.

go to aamco and have em run a diagnostic check, sounds like you may have a blown transmission. if thats the case and you decide to keep the car and fix it, dont immediately assume that fixing the current one is cheapest. look online for model and engine specific replacement transmissions. i had a blown trans and the current one was $2700 to fix and i got a used one with a 1 year warruntee for $1000 and i installed it myself. i think the grand am is front wheel drive so replacing that transmission yourself would most likely be a MASSIVE pain and could include removing lots of parts before even touching the transmission. i just replaced a FWD transmission and it was very complicated. if you decide to take it upon yourself to swap them yourself, make sure to have a full shop manual for your specific vehical, make sure to have lots of time and dont expect a simple, easy, flawless, or one weekend job. its rough but do-able. thats my fair warning! hope this helps.
