just replace my fuel pump /sending unit on my 06 Malibu, didn't matter if the pump was in or out of the tank, the gauge still reads wrong

you need to have the code pulled from the computer to know were to start to diagnose the problem.when the check engine light comes on there is a code in the pcm.

I live in Northern Ontario and I use my Tiburon as my 'winter beater'. Despite all of the problems with the car, mine starts reasonably well in very cold weather.

Getting your battery checked was a good start. The next step is to check your starter motor:

If the starter motor is failing, then it will just 'click' and not try to start the engine at all. Then, after a few attempts, the starter will suddenly work and start the engine just like normal. If this is the case, then get your starter replaced.

Clean the connectors on the back of the BCM and on the back of the gauge cluster.

If that doesn't work, then it could be:
- Fuel Sender & Vehicle Speed Sensor (should cause your "Check Engine" light to come on)
- Gauge Cluster
- BCM

You'll have to diagnose each of these possibilities.

Yes this is related to the exhaust but you will need to have it fixed.

Also I will give you a procedure on turning the check engine light off.

You might try removing the battery connectors for five minutes and replacing back.

If the codes do not disappear, please you might have to get a scanner to do that.

Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there. These codes are important because they POINT you/us in the right direction regarding location of the problem or the system which is causing the problem. Waiting to hear from you.

You can take your car into almost any auto parts store and they will hook it up to a diagnostic computer for free. This computer will read the error code from you car and they will look up this code and tell you why your check engine light is on. Most auto parts stores will also give you free advice about what to do about the problem depending on what the error code is. In additions to pulling your codes and giving you advice, auto parts stores are usually very helpful if you have some minor car problem like a dead battery or bad windshield wipers. If you buy your new battery or windshield wipers from them they will usually install them on the spot for free.

After searching around, I found several posts that suggested reseating all the relays and fuses under the hood. After checking, I noticed nearly all of them were not seated well. I pushed them all down and I haven't had the problem since.
