Plug wire firing order
Need to know what year, make, model and engine is in your car to help.
Hi David:
You can find the firing order for every engine if you know the cylinder numbering. Assume clockwise rotation of the distributor. You'll be right most of the time.
- Find number 1 cylinder and follow the spark plug lead back to the distributor. Write "1" on some tape and stick it on the cap.
- Follow the next lead back to the spark plug. determine which cylinder it is. Write that number on some tape and stick it on the cap at that lead.
- Repeat until you run out of leads.
- Starting at #1, write te numbers down in sequence.
4 cylinder inline - maybe 1432
6 cylinder inline - typically 153624
OR, you could input the make, model, and engine info and get the firing order off FIXYA or GOOGLE

To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement.
If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes to reflect how your engine is wired.
