Outside temp suddenly shows -40randomly when it is 80+F out.A/C stops working when guage shows erroneous temp. Replaced ambient sensor, cleaned wires near battery.any other thoughts?

code p 0072 refers to outside air temp sensor ( ambient temp sensor--low input===causes ---wiring short to ground, outside air temp sensor ---ECM
thee has to be an ambient temp sensor as that reports the temp to the ECM to adjust the air/fuel settings for cold starts
it could be in the MAF/VAF sensor area
i may be wrong but that sensor is for the ac not for engine operation and at 113 if its not that hot then the sensor is bad but if its summer its ok,, your engine works with intake air temp
The ambient temp sensor is related to the AC function, if the HVAC system thinks the outside temp is too low, the AC will not be turned on. You probably have a defective temp. sensor. It is easy to change and relatively inexpensive. It is located on the underside of the top radiator support almost in the center (just to the drivers side of center). The car dying at a stop light can probably be solved by cleaning the throttle body. Make sure that both the front and rear sides of the throttle body are cleaned. And also disconnect the battery during the cleaning process, this will reset the computer and allow it to relearn to the cleaned throttle body. The compass issue is another separate issue and may just require a recalibration. I don't know what the procedure is but try Googling the subject.
Hello, this is usually caused by a bad outside air temp sensor. the sensor is mounted behind the front grill, it has one connector with two wires pluged into it. here is a picture of the sensor
Had the same problem, replaced the ambient air temp sensor in front of the radiator. Cost is like 10-15 bucks. Don't worry if temp doesn't change right away. Took me about 5 miles and then it worked great.
YOUR ENGINE OPERATING RATING TEMPERATURE SUPPOSE TO BE 190 TO 200 DEGREES. IF COOLANT SENSOR DEGREES IS SHOWING 190 OR 200 DEGREES IT WORKING.THAT RIGHT.IF ITS SHOWING 60 OR 80 DEGREES IT FAULTY. AND ENGINE WILL RUN POORLY.
You can buy a replacement ambient air temp sensor at an auto parts store for about $10. Its as simple to change as a light bulb and can be found behind your front bumper at the base of the radiator.
when its at -40 usually its because the ambient temp sensor is not sending the proper signal to the controller.. it may just be disconnected.. the sensor it behind the grille.. it has a 2 wire connector to it ... itf its connected it may havea broken wire from body damage in an accident... its rare that the sensor fails..
The ambient temperature sensor going bad causes this exact problem. I've replaced many of them because when they show outside temp as being below 60 degrees, the A/C control module will shut the compressor off.
Right behind the grill around the rad. support on the passenger side (usually) there is a sensor called an ambient temperature sensor. That gives your outside temp. on your rearview mirror.
