Dodge 07 avenger,shifter locked ,brake light on a

Take starter relay off have tested if good than starter needs replaced or bad wire con.

There is a shifter lock computer (PCM) which could be malfunctioning....
There should be an override button at the base of the shift position locator... press that and you can shift it into gear...
The system has a switch on the brake ( paired with the cruise control switch I believe) so , it could be that too I suppose

If your parked on a hill you may have torque lock,if facing down hill you need to push car up hill to release shifter, if facing up hill you need to push car up hill to release shifter. To stop this from happening again apply park brake before putting into park.

first thing I check is if the brake lights work.

a trick that works on some cars is turn the key to one notch before "run", shift into neutral and start. then take it to the dealer, it's under warranty, right?

it maybe whats called torque lock, you put the car in park and didn't apply the brake, and trans. shifter locked maybe try rocking the car and then try to shift,hope this helps.

First off, thanks for your info. It allowed me to drive mine to the hardware store to get a part. It would have taken me much longer to figure out how to release the shifter via the hot pink plastic piece.

Looking at the assembly, I saw where the spring used to be. I bought a 75 cent, compression spring at the hardware store (Hillman spring #106 4" X 5/16" X 0.35) which I cut to 3.5in long. I pulled the cable assembly out that actuates the hot pink plastic tab, put the spring over the cable (coil over setup like parking breaks are) and re-installed. I verified it before I put all the covers back on. This can be a field repair, the covers can be removed by hand, but a pair of needle nose pliers are handy to re-install the cable.

Hot pink latch on left side. Press break petal, then pull back pink latch to shift into gear.


Cable end removed from latch, coil over spring added.


Use needle nose pliers to re-seat cable.

I had the same thing happen to my care about a week ago. I had to replace the shifting mechanism. I bought the part and replaced it myself. Would of cost 600 dollars at the dealership. It is covered under the warrenty if you're under 36,000 miles.

detent guid pin on shifter assemble may be broken or brake pedal safty switch malfunction (did u try depressing brake pedal )
