Unhook battery, press brakes to de-power everything. Leave unhooked for half hour or more.

Re-connect the battery. Turn key to on position. Do not start the car... just to on. Don't touch the gas pedal at all. Leave for ~10-20min.

Turn key straight to start and start the car. Do not touch the gas pedal. Let idle for ~10min without touching anything.

Turn off car. Restart, drive. It might take a few heat cycles and a bit of driving before the ECU 'learns' everything over again.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker Volkswagen does not have a dipstick. The fluid level is set by attaching a computer or scanner to the car. When the fluid is at 35 degree's there should be fluid pouring out the Level adjustment hole.

take it to vw and get a scan done.you need to know what it needs.
sometimes a defect in one area will trigger a false code,so be wary of that.i just worked on a 88 aerostar and the scanner said the tps(throttle position sensor) was low output,,it had very little power until after a few seconds and it was a worn timing chain,so be careful to check everything visually first...

'99 VW Jetta Cannot access ECM through DLC with generic scanner?

If there is an aftermarket radio in the car, unplug it. Sometimes those radios will interrupt the CAN signal & prevent the ECM from being accessed.
