Injectors need cleaning if it is a diesel
There is a buold up of contaminants in your fuel system that needs to be cleaned out

If it is a petrol engine I would be very surprised

Just add a couple of treatments of injector cleaner to a full tank of fuel and go out for a high rev blast for an horor twom that should hopefully clean it.

My old renault laguna failed emissions so I PUT 2 bottles of forte injection cleaner and went out for a 70 mile blast, it was a diesel car. I returned to the testing station within 2 hours and the black smoke had ccleard and I got the pass certificate.

White smoke

these engines are pron to injector failure !!! white smoke means dumping fuel ! black smoke means lack of air ! blue means burning oil! its not an easy task! by all means not cheap! ull need 7 injectors and one #8 injector call a ford dealer to see the price ! but i would also call an international aka navistar dealer! there sometimes cheaper

Power loss and black smoke?

I had a similar issue to this after I got in a VERY small fender bender (literally) in an 87 Turbo Supra. In my case, my pasenger fender got pushed in JUST enough to crack a charge pipe and cause a boost leak.

Basically, what was happening was the turbo would spool and build boost, the mass fair flow sensor would read all this air coming in and tell the ECU to dial up the the appropriate amount of fuel. When the air reached the cracks in the charge pipe, it would escape out of them. Thus there was a much lower air-to-fuel ratio, causing less fuel to combust, which lead to power loss and black smoke out of the exhaust.

My guess is either an oxygen sensor, or more likely a boost leak.

Good luck mate.

Car running ruff after tran put in.

black smoke is an indicator of too much fuel not burning in the combustion chamber, or too much carbon build up in the exhaust. you might have an injector problem, i.e. 2 much gas overloading somewhere.

1998 bmw 528I runs ruff after starting, smooths out after 30 sec.

If you let it warm up first it should not run ruff .Its the car staying in low gear to warm up the catalytic converter faster so that it can cut the amount of pollution that the is car producing .For the clean-air laws.
