Diagnostic Connector
To read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's), the test connector for the electronic engine control system must be used. The test connector is more commonly referred to as the Data Link Connector (DLC). On all Jeep models through 1990, the DLC is a 6-pin and a 15-pin connector located under the hood on the right side of the engine compartment. On 1991–93 models, the DLC is located under the hood on the left side of the engine compartment near the powertrain control module. On 1994–98 vehicles, the DLC is located in the passenger compartment, under the driver side dashboard.

Reading Codes
CARBURETED ENGINES
When a jumper wire is connected between the trouble code test terminals 6 and 7 of the 15-terminal diagnostic connector (D2), the CHECK ENGINE light will flash a trouble code or codes that indicate a problem area. For a bulb and system check, the CHECK ENGINE light will illuminate when the ignition switch is ON and the engine not started. If the test terminals are then grounded, the light will flash a code 12 that indicates the self-diagnostic system is operational. A code 12 consists of one flash, followed by a short pause, then two more flashes in quick succession. After a longer pause, the code will repeat two more times. If more than one trouble code is stored, each will be flashed three more times in numerical order, from the lowest to the highest numbered code.
NOTE: Remember that the fault message identifies a circuit problem, not a component.

this is a 1988 jeep cherokee laredo 4 x 4 it does not have anything by the steering column. no obd 1 reader. we hve tried the on, off, on, off this jeep seems not to diagnose itself. it will not blink when we do this procedure? we have found what it looks like to be a reader by the relay center. but we don't know. its not working with the on, off, on, off procedure.
what is the 2 little white plastic things with yellow caps located right beside the relay center on a 1988 jeep cherokee laredo 4 x 4?
