As its a petrol engine it wont have a cold start as such , when was it last serviced ? that could be the problem if not done regulary and recently , if have a good service record then i'd get the OBD codes read as may have a sensor/switch causing the issue

SOURCE: Audi 80e 1991 hard starting when cold

I've owned the same car. Check that the fuel relay 'primes' the system before you start the car. When you turn the key to the on position (all you dash lights, ready to start) you should hear the fuel pump run for a second or two. If it doesn't run you can replace the relay for about $30. If the relay is not the problem, it may be a check valve within the fuel line to the engine. This valve keeps fuel from draining back to the tank when the car is sitting. That way, there is fuel close to the motor when it's time to start. The temp senor was not a bad shot, they were thinking it was bad sensor not telling the cold start injector to run. Obviously not the case. However, the injector itself may be faulty in some way. As long as the car always starts, it's one of these problems, assuming the ignition system and engine mechanicals are in running order.  good luck. JK

SOURCE: Mazda 323 wont start until cold

If this vehicle has a distributor, try replacing the pickup coil. This should be located under your distributor cap and is responsible for spark. When your engine compartment gets warm from normal conditions, this plastic piece of **** shrinks and the metal tab attached to it doesn't make a good enough connection to conduct the electric spark to your plugs. Hope this helps!

SOURCE: B 2500 diesel pickup hard start from cold

Hey mate,

I have a Mazda B2200 from 1985, which has the same R2 diesel motor, and I had this same problem, which was exacerbated by the cold of winter....even here in a mild Melbourne.

Each time you turn the ignition on, the QSS (Quick Start System) powers up the glow plugs for about three seconds. This recycles again about three times, then.....nothing. The QSS reckons that you ought to have the bugger running by now!

In my desperation, I located the cable to the four glow plugs, and ran a second wire from the battery (+) via a push-button switch which I installed on the dash. This is my glow-plug BOOST circuit.

Now, when I want to start from c-c-c-cold, I push the button (with the ignition on) for about ten or fifteen seconds, which gives the glow plugs a goodly time to heat up the combustion chamber, and when I hit the starter, she usually fires up with a rattle, and a cloud of grey exhaust smoke.

BINGO!

(Of course, once the motor has warmed up, there is no need to use this BOOST circuit, for the combustion chambers are already hot enough to detonate the injected fuel.)

Have a go at it, as I know that it works!

John.

I have a 1997 mazda rustler 160i when the motor is hot or just standing in the sun its does not start in the morning and evening its starts no problem only when hot has this problem what can it be

An ignition coil is more than likely your problem. When the car is not running pull one spark plug wire and a plug and insert plug into the wire hold plug end on ground area. Have someone crank engine and check for spark. If no spark, replace ignition coil.

Hi there my mazda etude 160i wont start at normal operating temp must leave for few minutes then will start again

When you shut off a fully warmed up engine, the temp rises as all water circulation has stopped. This extra high temp can cause electronic parts to fail which then work again as they cool. Somewhat rare, but possible coil/module or crank/cam sensor issue. Also may have leaky injectors which bleed down when you stop and flood the engine. Sitting lets excess fuel evap and then will start again. Just my thoughts.

It could be any of the modules or sensors. The only way is to ask an auto electrician to connect a pro grade scan tool computer to it and check the Live Data when it is hard starting.

1989 mpv mazda does not start on cold mornings and days

I'm assuming the engine cranks with the starter but does not start and run.

check the operation of the cold start injector. This is a separate fuel injector that injects fuel into the intake manifold to help richen up the mixture for cold starts. It operates on a timer that is linked to a sensor that measures engine coolant temperature. Once warm or the timer runs out, the cold start injector is turned off. Other things to check:

Fuel pressure too high (floods engine through cold start injector), engine coolant temp sensor or intake air temp sensor is stuck at full hot (doesn't allow enough fuel for cold starts), fuel injectors are leaking (floods engine with fuel).

Hard to start on cold mornings but starts fine when warm

The cold start valve is not operating correctly. Either the engine coolant temperature sensor is bad or the cold start valve itself is bad. You can check the engine coolant temperature sensor by going to radio shack or any electronic store and purchase a 15k ohm or higher resistor. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) harness. Bridge the 2 female spade connections in the harness with the resistor. Start the engine. If the engine starts you need to replace the ECTS. If the engine is still hard to start, you need to remove the cold start valve, (wear safety goggles, and whatever you do don't smoke) place the cold start valve in a glass and have someone crank the engine. You should see gas coming out from the cold start valve. If not take a ohm meter and measure the terminal at the cold start valve after disconnecting the wire harness. The meter should read 25 ohms. If it doesn't replace the cold start valve.

1994 mazda protege 1.8 l auto trans won't start

It could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It sounds like when it is cold, your computer is interpreting your signal from the ECT (or lack therof) as being at a certain temperature and not providing the right amount of fuel in order to start the engine when it is cold. Does the check engine light blink or flash at all?
