My 1992 olds cutlass cierra failed smog due to high NOS, The smog guy said the car runs too lean. Can't afford to spend too much on diagnosing & fixing. What can I do to get it to pass?

How can you fail more than once?

After you fail, you go to a repair shop &
resolve ALL Vehicle issues

Then the shop road tests until all 8 I/M Monitors
run clear ,or there is no reason to go back to inspection
knowing your going to fail.

The problem is the shops & peoples inability to explain
what they need taken care of.

If you never work on the vehicle for years,then you don't
go to inspection,it is a given you will fail

Spark Plugs-every 3 years
Check for Cylinder Misfires
Always install a New Air Filter before inspection
Always install new fresh full sys oil before inspection

Oxygen Senors get replaced every 100,000 miles

Have to road test with professional scan tool & look at
all data,check monitors,fuel trim,O2 etc & check for codes

You have to spend the money to evaluate the vehicle, to see
if it is ready to go for inspection,not many are,their just driven
& neglected

Rich could be-- O2 Sensors,Dirty MAF Sensor,Vacuum Leaks,
Injector Leaks & more,I have seen a dirty air filter fail a car

It is on the end of the top radiator hose w/2 screws holding it to the engine BUT you must first remove the throttle body above it so you can access it. I did the job it took about 1 hour total

First, there are two different fuse locations in your vehicle. Then the actual application chart depends on which model Cutlass you have. They are very similar, but there are some differences depending on how your Cutlass is equipped. Here are the choices for that year:

Then, you might try looking in your owner's Manual. If you are like 98% of vehicle owners, there is most likely an Owner's Manual in the glove box that has never been opened, let alone, read.

If you do not have an owners manual, you may try searching for one. There are no Oldsmobile Owners Manuals offered on the GM web site any longer. You will surely not find one for any 20-year-old vehicle there. You will have to search places like classic parts.com to find what you are looking for.

Since your car has no EGR valve, you have one of two problems. You either have a bad O2 sensor, making the car run lean, or you need a new Cat. Or, you've had a bad O2 for so long that it ruined your cat, and now you may have to replace them both. Either way, I'd highly recommend having a smog tech take care of this problem for you, since you have no access to a smog machine that will tell you if the repairs you've done have solved your problem.

High NOX readings indicate a somewhat lean condition IE: hot exhaust. Possible causes are cracked and leaking vacuum lines or lazy oxygen sensors. If possible have a reputable garage with engine electronics scanner services check the sensor to see if its helping to create the lean condition

Since you're asking about cost, and not about the technical details, I'll tell you that this recently happened with my wife's 1996 Olds 88, and I paid about $2,300 for a transmission rebuild. I believe that car has the same transmission as your Cutlass Supreme.

Whether you want to spend that much depends on the overall condition of the car (ours had only 50k miles) and the cost to replace it.

Of course that's the worst case scenario. If you take it to a good shop for a hands-on diagnosis, they might recommend a less expensive repair.

I had noticed the car seemed a little sluggish and occasionally shuddered just a little during a shift, but hadn't thought much about it until the light came on and the shop said it was a transmission trouble code. Performance is noticeably better after the rebuild.

Behind the headlight, you should see the nylon bulb holder. Turn it counter clockwise, about a 1/4 turn, and it should come out. Pull the old bulb straight out, and replace it with the new one. Don't touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers, or you'll be replacing it again. Use cotton gloves or a paper towel. Put the holder back in the headlight, turn it clockwise until it locks.

I'm not sure that they are an exact match, but the equivalent GM vehicles for the Cutlass Ciera were the Chevrolet Celebrity, the Buick Century, and the Pontiac 6000.

nox is from running lean..... its realy high temps that cause this.......... replace the o2 sensors this should cure that any more help let me know
