What is a scan tool

A scan tool allows for the OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) codes to be read from the engine computer in a car. These are common electronic diagnostics tools used by automotive technicians. They are usually used when a check engine light comes on to determine the error codes associated with the check engine light.

They almost always connect via a standard plug on the divers side under the dash.

Most automotive parts supplier will check a car with complementary service to determine the codes stored in a customers automobile.

Why won 't computer communicate with code checker

Check the cigarette lighter fuse. This is what powers the DLC. If the fuse is good, check and see if the lighter works. If not, you have a bad wire. Code readers have to have power from the car. Most scanners have there own power and will read the computer, unless the data wire is bad or the computer is bad.

Bus won 39 start

OBD2 Stands for On Board Diagnostic Version 2
CANBUS means Control Area Network Bus
CANBUS is a communications protocol that allows devices and computers in a modern car to communicate with each other. It allows modern vehicles to have such functions as increasing the volume of the stereo as you speed up and slowing down the windscreen wipers when the car stops.
OBD2 is a standard for fault reporting and transmitting real time data on how an engine is behaving to an external device connected to the diagnostic port in your car. This may be a handheld OBD code reader device or a laptop equipped with suitable diagnostic software.
If you had a CANBUS capable OBD device connected to your car's diagnostic port then it would use the CANBUS protocol to exchange data with your cars on board computer systems.
With some devices this can be a 2 way exchange and can allow you to upload new engine software for better performance and program some of the other functions of the car like whether the central locking unlocks the drivers door or all the doors on the first click of the remote or requires two clicks to unlock all the doors.

1999 oldsmobile alero, no dash gauge response, no obd2 plug voltage

Check pin number 16 of the OBD 2 diagnostic connector, it should have 12 volts, if not the port will not power up the code reader or scanner. See diagram below.

obd1 1995 and older obd2 1996 and newer. the manual will tell you where the diagnostic port is exactly. could have 2 one under the steering wheel side of the dash and 1 under the hood. the scaner kits will usualy tell you what vehicles and what adapter to use. To learn more:obd2 scanner

Service engine soon light came on

The reason the "Check Engine" light comes on is because one of the sensors attached to your vehicle's engine is throwing a signal to the car's computer saying that there is a problem. The problem can be found by plugging into the car's diagnostic port and finding the error code, then fixing the problem. There's one problem with the old "plug a paperclip into the diagnostic port and read codes" trick-it only works on pre-1995 cars, which use OBD1 systems. Cars 1995 to present are OBD2, which require that you use a code scanner. You can purchase a code scanner at just about any car parts store, which can be rather costly and is recommended to be left to having a qualified tech do a computer scan.
I know this tool is helpful for your car.

Volvo v70 abs light and mil light on. no coms with diagnostic socket, all fuses are ok. no 12v at diag socket, so no diag tools will work.

Are you plugging into the obd2 diagnostics port under the dash or the diagnostics port under the hood? You should be plugged in under the dash to read codes for the MIL / ABS light. Just a heads up as well most scanners you can buy from the part stores do not have the necessary program protocols to read European cars.

Check engine warning light stays on. I have a 1991 ford econoline 250 5.8 van conversion. thank you

Sorry this one doesn't have a good answer. After 1996 cars use what's called OBD2 (on board diagnostic version 2) This allows anybody to use a handheld scanner to test any car for "check engine" light. But before 1996 each manufacturer had their own OBD. So only the dealer could check it or you would have to buy a specific scanner for Fords only. I have a OBD2 scanner. You might ask your local autoparts store what they have to read your code. Otherwise you have to take to dealer or mechanic that has the right scanner. I wish you well.

Connecting code scanner to 2007 chry 300 & 95 dodge 1/2 ton ram

Most obd2 connection ports are under the driver side dash and can be visible without removing any panels. On some chrysler Daimler vehicles you do have to remove a panel to access this service port. If its not located under the dash then it will be located under the hood on the driver side and be capped off and labeled obd2 scan tool service. Simply plug your wire in with the key on and the engine not running and read the codes from your vehicles on board computer/ecm/bcm. Hope this helps. Good luck.
