A 1997 model should have the cam sensor mounted in the distributor with the plug on the side. Its held in with two screws. The older models were in the bottom of the distributor, and the distributor shaft had to be removed to take the pickup-coil out.
The job of the pickup coil was transferred to the cam sensor, then moved to the camshaft when the distributor was discontinued.

SOURCE: How do I change out a heater core on a 1997 GMC 1500 Pickup truck

you need to remove the glove box disconect the heater hoses look behind the glove box some heater boxes are two pieces and you can remove the heater half some you need to remove the whole piece if that is the case let a garage do it because they need to disconect the a/c so it needs to be evacuated and recharged if it is a two piece box just remove the bolts that hold the heater core under the dash and pull the box strait back good luck

SOURCE: 1997 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Replacement

take off the cover on the top and bottom of the steering column just behind the wheel. pop the tilt lever out simply just by grabbing it and give it a good tug. then once you have the new switch and you get in there your going to need an inverted torx socket to remove the small bolts that hold the switch to the column. do not move the gear on the new switch make sure it lines up exactly as the old one did!!!!!!!!!!!!

1997jimmy cuts off and starts back up when its been sitting for a while. replace iginition modulator, fuel filter, and fuel pump don't know what it is

Here's one thing you can do, carry little gas with you and when it cuts off, pour some gas down the intake manifold or throttle body. If it starts you probably have a fuel problem. If it doesn't start you most likely have a ignition problem. Using a test light check for Power going to your coil or coils. To rule out the ignition switch. But if I were to take a guess, ignition coil or coil wire, and if it has a distributor, ignition module pickup and rotor. Good luck.

Engine will not fire at all. 1987 GMC S-15, 2.8L engine

Good Morning,

(1987, GMC, S-15, 2.8V6,Pickup truck) The problem still exists. I think I am to the point where I have to pull the distributor out of the engine. I have never done that before, so I will be very careful.
I also decribed the problem to your Premium Assistance Service and as of now, have had no response.
