Hi everyone, I really appreciate you guys and gals helping me out with diagnosing this issue. I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback (in blue) w/ 140K miles. Here's the problem: I got into my vehicle this morning, started it up, and everything looked fine. I drove down the road, and as soon as I hit 10 miles per hour the speedometer froze at 10mph. The RPM gauge also froze at 2300rpm. At the same time, the ABS, Parking Brake, TCS, and Air Bag lights all illuminated on the dash. When I tried to stop at the stop sign, the brakes had a weird "click" feeling which almost felt like ABS was taking effect under normal braking, but don't let that cloud your judgment cause it was only for a half a second. As soon as I came to a complete stop, the dash lights all turned off (and all on again when resuming drive). In addition, I nurtured the vehicle back down the street to my house where I let it sit at idle for 10 min. Toward the end of the 10 min, the vehicle sounded like it wanted to stop running (ex. puttering sound, not firing on all cylinders). After hearing this I thought it could have been a bad connection on the battery terminals or the alternator, so I disconnected/reconnected both of them (properly greased). This didn't help. Some history, I have been hearing a slight squeel coming from the driver side of the vehicle for the past 2 weeks; which I just assumed was the squeeler tab on the brake pads but I could be wrong. Please help me out, as I want to be able to get to work tomorrow!! Thank you!
Sounds like a dead battery and or alternator going bad. i would try starting here. though it has enough power to start, most of your electronics do not like low voltage.
Taking into account the electronics on todays vehicles , even in 2003 , if you don't have scan tools , lab scopes an the like test equipment , plus knowledge . Your better off taking this to a ASE certified Tech. Given that all those telltale lights came on at the same time , I'd say you have a instrument cluster problem or lose wiring connection somewhere or intermittent problem on the Serial data bus ! Do you know what that is ? All the modules on the vehicle have a communication network where they are able to share information . You need to have it hooked up to professional grade scan tool to see if all control modules are able too communicate with scan tool . Your probably going to find there is a U DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored in one or more modules ! And if your headlamps are bright when turned on, you do not have a lose battery connection ! You did not mention check engine light , was it on ?
Testimonial: "The check engine light does come on with the rest, but only some of the time for the check engine light."
