Hey guys well I have a new problem with my 06 crown Vic lx. Overheated 3 times fix it car ran fine, that was 6000 miles ago no knocks. Now she knocks/ taps at start up only for a min in the morning?

I did not notice any knocking till after I installed an oil pressure gauge? I installed it into the port right by the oil filter, shortly after I notice the the knock. Idk if that's why and I caused it or the overheating.. It's a tapping knock only at first started when cold for a min or two then goes away.

How many miles are on your oil change and what viscosity oil do you use ?

These motors are finicky about 5W-20 weight motor oil as any other oil causes chain tensioner issues.

4.6s are bad for timing chain knock upon first starting too when enough miles are on car.

Hey Robert Wood, after reading your post I took an old shovel and cut the handle using it to listen to the engine. I went all over including oil pan and trans nothing till I listen to the timming cover, only spot where knock knock knock was heard.. Thank you I will further investigate the timming chain..

  • Joshua Jun 18, 2015

I did have the accessory belt off too.

You can buy the chain kit with guides, tensioners and chains for $150 on Ebay. My 03 CVPI has 120,000 on the engine and I am preparing to redo the guides and tensioners and maybe the chains if they are stretched.

If the engine is knowking you probably need to have a good mechanic to look at it, could save you a lot of moey in the long run.If you have gone from overheating to knocking something is very amiss. The six monthes of temporary fix may have hidden an underlying problem.

GOOD LUCK

Testimonial: "Robert Wood you hit the nail dead on with the timming, I pulled the timming cover and found the chain guides are bad and I can see where the chain is hitting. The chain is not tight at all I'll be ordering those parts off eBay tomorrow, thanks again for your help Robert."

First you got to determen where its comming from, surley you can hear if its comming from top of engine or from oil pan, i'am not there to hear it so its hard to tell what it is, but i can take some gusses on what it could be. You said a while back it started tapping, that could be a loose or woren rocker or lifter does it run on all cyls. no miss, good oil pressure, could be a connecting rod. The millage is high and things do wear out.

Replace you Maf sensor and have a nice day. lol does the hesitation go away when you let off the gas. does it buck hesitate and misfire under load? most common problem is the maf sesnor.
easy to change. don't buy a used part it may develop the same problem after a little while. you can try cleaning the wire inside with brake cleaner (not intake cleaner). it may or may not help.

Your axle bearing is more than likely shot. The right side goes out first for some reason. Fairly inexpensive if you can do it yourself.

'99 Ford Crown Vic LX: #12 30A Maxi fuse blows seconds after starting or ignition turned on.

i had this problem with my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo with the brake lights it kept popping fuses right after the ignition was turned on try putting a higher amp fuse in place of the old one that keeps blowing then check for shorts to the starter and check grounds and wires and also the transmission issue check the fluid and then if the fluid is fine change the transmission filter the filter may have not gotten replaced when the transmission was rebuilt and may be clogged or dirty

1997 Crown Vic blows radio fuses

Try checking all the grounds for the radio, over time they can weeken. If that doesn't work, put in a new ground wire with a heavier gauge, that should fix it. It sounds like a ground problem.

Good luck, Daniel
