Unless your changeing your entire tank out you dont drop the tank on a cougar the cup holder in the back seat is just a cover for your fuel pump whole back seat flips up :)
You will find bolt,s or straps holding it to the frame of the car.Remove the filler pipe first remove fuel line to the front of the car remove wiring harness to fuel pump.

Don't listen to that guy!!!! you need to take the plastic cover behind the steering wheel. there are two bolts holding the air bag in t30 (torx) then the air bag falls right off. then the steering wheel is held in by a 15 mm head bolt.
Warning: make sure battery is disconnected for at least 30 min before you mess with the air bag connector

GET SOME LARGE CHANEL LOCK PLIERS.GRIP HOSE TWIST A LITTLE WORK IT OFF.GAS TANK.BECAREFUL NOT TO MAKE ANY SPARKS WITH PLIERS.BESURE TO REPLACE FILLER HOSE.

There are 3 bolts. You'll need a LOT of socket extensions and a car hoist!
and a lot of time and patients.
But an even better idea is to just check the wire connections make sure they are well connected and no gaps on the female connectors if you suspect a bad alt.
