Car overheats when using ac.

2005 Ford Freestar, I've replaced the radiator fan. However, the car idles as if it wants to cut off and overheats. What the likely coroprit? Thermostat?

The idle fluctuation could be the A/C compressor kicking in and out. If that fluctuation goes away when the A/C is turned off, then you would need to investigate why the A/C is not on more steady.

The increased heat from the use of the A/C is normal. But you need to find out why or if the cooling fan is not running (or is it running?). The cooling fan is suppose to compensate for using the A/C.

I wrote earlier about there being Relays for the electric cooling fan. The Relay is activated by a temperature sensor. About the old cooling fan--did you test it to see if it worked off the car? If you did not need a new electric cooling fan you still need to fix the Relay or the temperature sensor.

Now replace the thermostat. The other part on some vehicles (usually not on transverse mount engines) is the mechanical cooling fan clutch. This is checked by measuring rpm of the clutch blades. It takes a special adjustable timing light to do this. The clutch is fluid filled and adjusts its grip by the air temperature around it. The amount of slippage is why rpm is measured. It is suppose to slip most in the cold and then lock in place in warmer temperatures.

Also I would recommend "aboutautomobile.com" for reported problems. Also web search overheating problems for your model.

You can try several things. The radiator fan is controlled by a thermal switch and in some cases the A/C maximum air setting. Do you know if the fan is turning on? Some have 2 speeds. The thermostat is a low cost guess.

The engine idle can be affected by overheating. Also turn off the A/C and see if that makes a difference in idle or overheating.

Testimonial: "The idle fluctuates and engine temperature rises only during ac operation. What do you think?"

Is the engine really overheating ? Hook up scan tool an see what temp. sensor is telling PCM / ECM . Did you use Infrared Thermometer Temperature Gun to see real temp. of the engine ? GM vehicles from 2003 to 2005 had issues with bad stepper motors in instrument clusters ,could show over heating when is really not . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTm2oDx-_GM&t=30s

Car overheats while idleing fan not turning on ac not blowing

Check the Fan switch at the bottom of the radiator, if you disconnect it and have a power feed to the switch then it isn't a fuse.Bridge the terminals and if the fan comes on then the fault is probably the switch.

96 mitsubishi eclipse overheating while AC is on!

Try replacing your cooling fans since both fans are probably not coming on at the time the a/c is on. If your car uses a single fan, then it must have a hi and lo speed so probably the low works but the high doesn't. If you can barely hear the fan spin then it is probably working in the low speed position and you should check that.

2000 crown victoria overheats with ac off

The AC runs the fan that cools the AC condenser and the radiator. You may have a problem with the cooling fan for the engine only or its control circuit, this fan is controlled by the main computer in the car called the PCM, you need the dealer to perform a test that operates the cooling fan and delivers back fault codes for any problems found with its operation.

are the upper and lower radiator hoses hot when car overheats? if so check for a clogged radiator or weak water pump. if one hose is hot and the other is cold or much cooler then replace the thermostat.

2000 sebring. Overheats with air conditioning on.

I just had my coolant flushed and my radiator cooling fan replaced. The car was slightly overheating and would "gargle" in the coolant bowl after I turned the engine off. It turned out to be the radiator was clogged up on one side.

I went full tilt and replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and timing belt. I have 85,000 miles on the car and it was about time to do these things anyway. It is running like a new car now.
