My 1981 140 hp Evinrude will not shift thinking might be cable took them off they work fine what would be stopping it from forward to reverse?

If Drive Selector switch is properly aligned then a shift silonoid might be the problem.

Sounds to me like it has a broken reverse band or the reverse band strut has come loose. You can remove the transmission pan and see if the band is broken or not. The reverse band is at the rear of the transmission. Either way you will more than likely have to pull the transmission to repair it. Thanks and good luck with your repair.

SOURCE: My 97 lincoln Continental go's forward just fine.

The TCM or transmission control module may be bad or a stuck trans. shift soleniod. It may be worth it just to take it to a certified transmission shop to have them run a diagnostic check to retrieve the TCM's trouble codes then go from there.

Go under the engine cover, and spray the shifter linkage and rollers for the shift detents. Do not force shifter into position, just wiggle shifter back and forth while observing shift linkage to determine the point of binding. Use lithium grease (spray) on all contact points and make sure no rollers are broken. Do not disturb ignition advance and throttle linkage. Just spray them too.

06 kia spectra how do your adjust the shift cables on a manual trans all forward gears are fine problem is with reverse no problem untie we changed the clutch

The clutch is not clearing properly ,so wait a while for it to level itself off ,to get reverse in the meantime you stop engine ,put in reverse then start engine ,if after a while it still doesnt work and tries to jump out of gear you will have to strip the gearbox and change the dog gear

The transmission solenoids are not working properly. Probably requires a transmission rebuild.
I don't think it's in the ground strap or wiring.
It's an internal problem with the transmission.

1988 Jaguar xj6 No forward in the automatic trans rev works fine

the linkage is just a slight bit off, it parks between gears when you shift into the slots. Disassemble the shifter from the center console, and slowly move just the cable its self between the positions and see if you have forword gears. When you find and sync the gears, then tighten the cable to the shifter so the positions match the notches in the shifter.
