Why does the temp gauge indicate the car is running hot when it is not?

Everything has been checked or fixed for this. Also the gas gauge doesn't work - never know how much gas is in the tank.

Most likely a bad instrument cluster.
This is a very common problem among GM Products from 2002-2006.
I myself have replaced many of these.
There is people online that fix them.

Hi Sandra:
Let's try to figure out the temp guage situation.........
There are 2 parts to this system:
1) - the temperature sensor attached to the engine block (old school) or
- the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT sensor) Typically attached to the radiator (New school where the car gets to think it knows more than you do), and
2) The Engine Temperature Guage located on the dash where you get to look at it. This could also be a Hot Engine light.
Let's think old school and assume that you have a sender and a guage.....
If the Guage is telling you that the engine is overheating and you KNOW that it is not, then:
- either the sensor is not sending correct information, or
- The guage is not accurate. When the engine is cold and you first turn the ignition key on, what does the temp guage do? As the engine warms up, does the guage suddenly go way up?

Based on too many years experience, I tend to not trust the sender on older vehicles. Try disconnecting the electrical lead from the sensor and see what reaction you get from the guage.
It may be that replacing the sensor will fix the problem.

Ahh ... the gas gauge / fuel level gauge does not work, either.

Maybe you need to replace the motors that are behind those dials. People are getting charged $300-$500 to have the fuel gauge replaced when the problem really is the little motor - 5 or 6 of them for less than $30. 2003 Buick LeSabre owners are having the same problem with their fuel gauges being erratic.

Temp gauge says hot(goes all the way to left by gas gauge)little bit of coolant under car once in a while but then coolant will be low-There is no white smoke.Doesn't heat or cool well.heater core has...

the coolant could be just overflow,, as far as the temp,, replace the thermostat as a first thing, when your car gets that hot, it causes readings to be sent to the computer that sends mixed signals to other parts of the car, The first thing you should do is pull the diagnostic codes. This will tell you if the thermostat is dead.check the temp sending unit, it is located under the upper radiator hose, 19mm wrench will take it off, it costs about 20 bucks but you also need to replace the thermostat. all in all its about 25 bucks total and all your gauges work fine....

Temperature gauge fluctuates and the heater blows cold air

Definitely check your fluid level in your radiator. Top it off all the way. I've seen that happen multiple times on cars that were low on anti-freeze. If that doesn't work try replacing your thermostat. It's cheap and the easiest place to start if topping off the fluid doesn't get you fixed up.

Emissions test fail mixture to rich

what i used to do is pour a small bottle of rubbing alcohol in the gas tank....this mixture burns very hot so it will clean everything out thus burning all the gas particles off......i used to do this in a 1988 mustang gt that ran real rich because of performance parts and i couldnt ever get it to pass the tests....also try o2 sensors as well as possibly map sensor if equipped...this could be the problem....
temp gauge not working? check wiring and also check tempature sending unit and block temperature sensor.
