I'm not Familiar with the ford in specific however MOST engines Do have a loose and a tight side the loose side generally has a nylon "tensioner" that presses against the chain keeping it snug. This is to prevent the chain from snapping, when throttle is suddenly applied, This generally not used on the stronger double roller chains, but I have seen them used with these as well. The tensioner is usually part of the timing cover but not always. Not knowing which engine you have I cant check to see if your engine uses a tensioner and if so what type and where it is located.

I would check to see if you have your tensioner on correctly and all the marks lined up correctly. Thats usually the problem.

Hope this helps Mike

Easiest first, double check you have the right timing chain. Are there guides or followers that may be worn, or out of adjustment.

You must replace the timing chain and the tensioner assembly as well as any other parts that you find worn such as sprockets and guides. All this requires special tools and the timing cover to be removed.

Have you ever had your timing chain replaced? If not, then most likely your timing chain is getting loose and starting to tap on the sides of the housing. This is normal after probably 110-130000 miles, so you may consider this. DOHC engines don't have the lifter tapping problems that pushrod engines have. The reason you only year the timing chain tap at idle and when warm, is the metal expands when it warms up, making the chain slightly longer. At idle, chains and belts "flutter," or shake back and forth. when the engine speeds up, it puts more tension on the chain and it stops.

Go to http://www.hmaservice.com/ and register (vehicle by VIN). Afterward, you'll have access to technical information (manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, etc) about your vehicle. There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) regarding the timing chain noise.

Problem whit my timer chain

I am going to have to assume this is a 4 cylinder with a timing chain. Probably a 22R or 22RE engine. This is not a small job. The cause of a loose chain is attributed to 1. timing chain stretch 2. the plastic guides break or wear away 3.the tensioner is no longer tensioning. The fix is to replace timing chain, chain guides, and the tensioner, while you have the vehicle apart it is GP ( general practice) to replace the front crankshaft seal as well as valve cover gasket and half moons, be sure to check your water pump as well for leakage and or bad bearings. Do a tune-up, adjust the valves and youll be good as new! Buy a Haynes or Chilton book for teardown instructions. Hope this helps ya!
