Oil in the coolant is usually an intake manifold gasket problem on these engines. If a head gasket failure the engine will normally overheat and give erratic temp guage readings. Make sure the oil level is full. Is the rattle noise coming from the engine? Some times the exhaust (converter) will fail and the catylist will seperate causing a rattle noise from the exhaust and plug it up giving a no power situation

You need to make sure you have fuel, spark and compression.
Remove one of the plug wires, stick a screwdriver (or other suitable item into the end of the wire. Then hold the exposed metal of the screwdriver about 1/2 and inch from some metal (engine block, intake manifold, etc). Be sure to keep clear of the fan/belts and wear gloves (as you could be shocked). Have a helper crank the engine and watch to see a spark between the screwdriver and the metal on the engine.
Check the fuel pressure to make sure you are getting fuel.
Check the compression with a gauge.
By completing these test you will know which route you need to look into.

its not hard, but you need the right tools, procedures, you need to know what you are doing. You also need to repair why the head gasket is blown. You will need the head checked out at a machine shop, it may be warped.
