Only seen it a few times. Dodges and GM's. The crank sensor will crack at the bolt. This causes a very random shut down, could be a mile down the road, or fifty miles later.. The vehicle can start right back up or wait several minutes or hours to start.

go to Didgeforums.com.

I had a similiar problem, found the solution there. It was the wiring harnes on the drivers side under the hood, just above the wheel well. there are a cluster of wires in a bundle. I unpacked the bundle carefuly and sure enough the were two or three wires all coroded, had wite powder from corosion. repaired the connections and bingo. I posted details at dodgeforums.com. browse around there. I posted pictures as well. this is a common problem.

Not good...you did more than I would have done...sounds like its time to take it to a qualified repairman and have him diagnose the problem(s).

SOURCE: Burning out the pickup coil in 1986 F-150 w/302

Hello genobeano: My name is Roger and I will give some information that should help. When you replace the pick up coil also replace the ignition module. The ignition module will short out the pick up coil. If the module is attached to the side of the distributor be sure to use die electric grease when installing the module on the distributor. Should you not use the grease you will burn up the ignition system. By the same token should the pick up coil short out the module will burn out. The fact it runs for a short time says that you have a heat problem. Normally is in the ignition system. There was a tech bulletin to replace the pick up and module as a unit to correct the problem.
Please rate the answer as this lets us know you received correct information. Should you need further help please just ask. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Sounds like your IAC motor is getting stopped up. Clean out the passage, and the throttle body. If that doesn't work, get a new IAC motor.

Hello you say no spark again well in the past i have replaced coils on Fords same day the coil pack quit!.So perhaps return it as a faulty pack.Manufactures still makeing defective parts!.Also if you have service engine light on you should have a OBD 2 scan to retreve any electrical faults might be.

2004 dakota-after driving 20-30 min in 80 degree outdoor temps the truck wont restart as if it isnt getting fuel. Problem never occurs in cooler temps. After a short time it will restart and runs normally...

check for hot fuel lines causing a vapour lock situation. move any lines away from heat sources or insulate with fibre glass cloth
if it is a carby unit , the problem can sometimes be overcome by placing a fuel filter in the line just next to the carby

Shuts down for no apparent reason

Have you figured out if you are loosing spark or fuel pressure when the engine quits ? Could be a relay, coil, fuel pump, or various other electrical components.

Quits after warm up wont restart

sounds like you have a fuel pump problem, fuel pumps will usually get hot and then shut off allowing it to sit 30 mins lets the pump cool down allowing it to start pumping, the way you can test it is get a can of starting fluid the next time it quits raise your hood and spray some fluid down into the throttle body and if it starts and then dies it is most likely your fuel pump, hope this helps.

It keeps shuting down i have replaced fuel pump, plugs, coil, when driving it will just shut down if let it set for a few min it will start back up now it will not start...

You need to figure out which one you are losing. You are either losing fuel, or spark. When the engine quits, immediately open the hood, and check for spark. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

I have a 1996 dodge dakota that will start and run fine for a bit and then just shuts down and will not fire back up for up to an hour at times, then will start and run fine for another 15 min.

first you need to find out whats missing when it cuts off check to see if you have spark at plugs if you do check to see if you are getting fuel with out either it will not run sounds as if something is getting hot and shutting down ie the 15mins of running before cutting off find which one you are losing and repost i will help direct you depending on your findings
