Just at 100,000 miles. Put my car in for recommended timing belt replacement and now they tell me I have to replace front axle shaft. Why would that need to be replace? What are the 'symptoms' of a problem with a bad front axle shaft?
You could also get a vibration, or shake while accelerating. And if the boot is just torn, it will find grease all over, and eventually will start the clicking. Also would make a clunk when put into gear, forward or reverse.
Testimonial: "thank you - I haven't noticed anything in particular.....the car sits a lot because it's at a second home...I do keep an eye on the garage floor for spots.....hadn't noticed anything other than the usual condensation drips after being out in the heat.... ride was not the smoothest as tires had started to get some flat spots...I replaced all 4 last week and had alignment as I am taking a long road trip next month and wanted no problems ......I was able to talk to the mechanic this morning- he said that axle shaft/joint? was leaking lots of grease....so I'm going to go ahead and have him replace it- .....went back out to garage to look more closely at the floor and notice just a very few small drop marks...still fresh...so the leaking may actually just have started.... I guess I'm suspecting that doing the alignment may have triggered it....but the with the age of the car it may have just been the trigger to set it off-thanks for your info"
Symtons when you make a left or right turn if you hear a clicking noise that is a bad axle either side.
Testimonial: "thanks - I haven't noticed any of that.....but it's a low-usage car and the ride hasn't been the smoothest last few years because the tires had developed some flat spots ......."

SOURCE: timing belt replacement frequency
error definitely some issues with the early six-cylinder timing belts. There were some updates, including a dampener for one of the cams. See if you can get copies of the service bulletins for your engine. I think the belt may also be somewhat wider on the later engines. DO NOT use the later interval.

It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.
SOURCE: I have a 2000 S40 Volvo with 101,000 miles. I have
if that belt breaks and you have an interference engine the valve can be damaged because the piston comes up and hits the valve that is left open when belt breaks
