Hissing when depressing brake pedal, little bit of rough idle, and mushy brake pedal.
Call parts store for price of part. Replacement is not difficult so expect $100 to $150 labor.
Check you Vacuum lines going to the Brake Booster first, it is fairly rare for a booster to go out and is usually an bad hose or the grommet sealing the hose to the booster.
Thanks for the question. I suspect the booster MIGHT not be the issue, although I am looking for less expensive alternatives. Perhaps the brake booster check valve itself (white plastic quarter-sized plastic thing) on the outside of the booster with the hose running to it, or the hose itself may be sucking air somewhere. That's $45.00. That symptom usually produces a HARD brake rather than a mushy one, but it's worth a try.
The Volvo booster is $450, and the Ate brand (just as good) is about 1/2 that price. I would do some leak checking with a vacuum gauge, and perhaps a stethoscope to make sure it's actually the booster that is leaking internally, rather than the less-expensive alternatives that are the hoses from the manifold, or the booster check valve.
About 200 dollars
