fan belts are measured in millimeters and ribs a usual inked number would be 6pk240 meaning a 6 rib belt width with 240mm in length So know how many ribs you have from the old belt makes this easy to find the length by taking kite string and following the belt diagram to get the length granted when coming to tensioner you have to subtract some from the string or have someone hold tension about half the travel this will get you close the Gates belt number is K071013 (7 rib 101.8 inches) look for K070880 about 85-91 inches
I am assuming you want the air conditioner compressor BMW part number 64 52 6 910 458 for a 200 E46 323ci. Open the hood and look at the front of the engine where the belts are. There are two ribbed v-belts coming off of the crank shaft pulley located in the center of the engine down low. The longer belt (6PK x 1538) drives everything else (water pump, alternator). The short belt (5PK x 863) goes to the air conditioner compressor on the passenger side of the engine.
Not recommended to measure the serpentine belt...as to many variables...Your local Auto parts store should have your needed replacement in stock...best to be perfect on the dimensions...:) Your Make, Model, and engine are all the specs the Parts Team needs...:) Hope this helps.
If there is no decal under the hood somewhere, start with the belt around the crankshaft, and then go flats to flats, ribs to ribs. You may have to try a couple of times, but you'll get it.
if the pulley is smoth the belts back rides on that surface if it is ribbed or lined the inside of the belt rides on that surface , you local parts store should have a diagram or dealership .
