Take it to an AutoZone auto parts store, they will read them for free from your jeep's computer. Let me know how this turns out for you.

Woops, I thought it was 98, not 88.
Anyway to check the codes turn the key on off on off on within five seconds and then read the flashing engine light. You should get a 12 then a number and then a 55. The 12 is the start reference code and the 55 is the end reference code. The middle number is the number you need to know what is wrong.

Diagnostic Connector
To read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's), the test connector for the electronic engine control system must be used. The test connector is more commonly referred to as the Data Link Connector (DLC). On all Jeep models through 1990, the DLC is a 6-pin and a 15-pin connector located under the hood on the right side of the engine compartment. On 1991–93 models, the DLC is located under the hood on the left side of the engine compartment near the powertrain control module. On 1994–98 vehicles, the DLC is located in the passenger compartment, under the driver side dashboard.

sounds like a burned up fusable link. look for a bunrned piece of wire. it might be easier to find if you look for a piece of heat shrink over a single wire. it's probably in the main harness under the hood, to check for this use a multimeter at the fuse block. pull the fuses one at a time from the affected systems and turn them on. if you have current to any or all of them it is not a fusable link, however if none of them have current when you turn them on check the wireing diagram in a chiltons or haynes manual for fusable links.

this is a 1988 jeep cherokee. this is not an obd 2.
we have tried this solution. the emmisions maintenance light still stays on. we left the battery cable off all night and the light still remains on when you turn the key on and it will not blink when you turn the key off and on. it seems like it wont go into diagnose mode. please help!!!!
