Do I need to pull the transmission to replace freeze plugs in the 1989 crown Victoria?

There are several freeze plugs located throughout the engine block. There will be one or two located on the back side of the engine and the transmission will have to be removed to access these if they are leaking

SOURCE: replace 2004 Crown Victoria headlight

From the engine compartment, unlock the 3 tabs that are over the headlight housing area. Remove the cover and unscrew the plastic ring that has the wires protruding from it. Carefully pulls the light fixture out of the housing. Pull the 2 L-shaped tabs up and remove the lens section. Reverse the steps to re-install the headlight. If replacing the full turn signal housing, unscrew 2 screws from each light , disconnect bulb wiring and remove. Replace accordingly.

I have antifreeze coolant leaking from the rear of my engine and want to gain excess to my rear freeze plugs. Do I pull my transmission to change the rear freeze plugs on the 1989 crown Victoria?

Yes, you have to pull the transmission. But look it over closely. Most likely the coolant is coming from somewhere else. I have never seen or replaced a bad freeze plug back there. Water can't get to them to rust them out from the outside in. Only if you use water only to cool the engine. Heater hoses and the intake manifold gaskets can cause a leak in this area.

What type freeze plug goes in the back of block center behind the main seal cover plate or what goes there

First you will need to remove the transmission to gain access to the freeze plugs. Remove them gently being careful to not scratch the sides of the hole that they fit into. Replace them with brass plugs. They last much longer than steel plugs. Also remember to replace the antifreeze in your cooling system. If you don't use antifreeze the new plugs will rust out quickly and you will be replacing the plugs again in the near future.
