SOURCE: I'm having a problem with the gear shift button.

The shift selector linkage can get sticky once in a while. Put your parking brake on and with the car off put it into 1st or 2nd gear then pull the handle off of the shifter. Remove anything in your cup holder and then you can snap off the shift console cover and get to the shift linkage beneath it. Spray lithium or silicone grease into all of the adjoining linkage rods and work it in and out. Then do the same at the top of the shift selector lever that you pulled the handle off of and push down on the top of the little plastic knob protruding from the top of it...that is how you change gears. It may just be sticky only in THAT spot but it doesn't hurt to get everything while you have it apart. Good luck let me know!

SOURCE: the car wont come out of park

The problem is with the shift interlock switch...the device which prevents the transmission from being shifted out of park without the brake pedal pressed. The switch is usually located somewhere under dash near steering column on column shift models and under the console on floor shift models. Have it replaced.

SOURCE: 1998 olds aurora will not shift out of park. How do I remove shifter handle from floor shifter? Do not know if it is a shifter problem or a switch brake to shift problem.

This may be a shifter cable. Can you hear the solinoid click when you depress the brake pedal? If not check the switch.

2007 Impala stuck in park and gear override silver button won't work. Can't figure out the problem please help

If your 2007 Impala is stuck in park and the gear override silver button doesn't work, there may be a few potential problems that are causing the problem. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting solutions you can try: Brake light switch: The most common cause of this problem is a faulty brake light switch. The brake light switch is responsible for sending a signal to the shift interlock solenoid to release the shifter when the brake pedal is depressed and can prevent the shifter from releasing if the switch does not operate properly. Make sure your brake lights work by pressing on the brake pedal. If they don't work, it's probably a brake light switch issue that needs to be replaced. Shift Interlock Solenoid: The shift interlock solenoid is a mechanism that prevents the shifter from moving without pressing the brake pedal If the solenoid is faulty or a blown fuse can cause the shifter to go into park. Check the fuse connected to the shift interlock system and replace if necessary. If the fuse is good, the solenoid may need to be replaced. Shift Cable: The shift cable connects the shifter to the transmission and allows you to change gears. Damaged, loose, or misaligned cables can prevent the shifter from leaving the parking space. Inspect the shift cable for any obvious issues and make sure it is securely attached to the shifter and transmission. Shift lock control module: Some vehicles have a shift lock control module that ensures proper operation of the shift interlock system. Malfunction of this module can cause the problem. It may be necessary to use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any error codes associated with the module. Ignition switch: Faulty ignition under certain conditions

CAN NOT DEPRESS BUTTON TO SHIFT MY 1997 LINCOLN OUT OF PARK SOMETIMES

Brake light switch , wiring etc... Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuit's using a wiring diagram an a DVOM -digital volt ohm meter ? Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model an engine size . Under system click on transmission / transaxle .Under subsystem click on shift interlock . Click the search button an then the blue link . Test the electrical circuits .
Shift Interlock System An ignition/shifter interlock mechanism is installed to prevent shifting the transaxle out of the PARK position unless the ignition switch is rotated to RUN and the brake pedal is applied. The floor shift interlock system consists of:
  • an actuator assembly integral to the ignition/shifter interlock cable assembly.
  • a bracket retaining the actuator.
  • the necessary wiring.
The solenoid is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, locking the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the ignition/shifter interlock actuator is deactivated and the transaxle range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.

Symptom Chart-External Controls
Use Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter 105-R0051 or equivalent to perform pinpoint tests.
Symptom Chart-External Controls Condition Possible Source Action
  • Shift Interlock System Does Not Release or Lock Properly
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Blown fuse.

1998 gmc 1500 5.7L shifter sticks (auto transmission. ) its a bugger to get out of park, i was thinking the brake sensor (disconected the shifter cable at the tranny)then it shifts fine, and can shift fine...

Shift interlock system problem . Not the cable . Your vehicle has a safety system that won't allow the gear selector to be moved from park without the brake pedal pushed . Lock solenoid keeps gear selector from moving . Trying to force it will break something . Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a volt meter ? Here is a web site for free wiring diagrams http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html
Enter the vehicle info. Year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on transmission / transaxle , then under subsystem click on shift interlock . Click the search button then the blue link. Park neutral switch , brake switch and the shift interlock solenoid , check electrical circuits .

My shifter wont shift from park to drive brake lights work 94 civic

You may have a bad switch (Ford calls it a brake shift interlock not sure the exact term Honda uses) but check all your fuses. Below I gave you a picture and instructions on how to bypass the interlock switch until you can get the repair done or replace the bad fuse. I hope this helps and good luck.

Transmission will not shift out of park. I pushed brake and the shifter will not move from park with the button on side of shifter pushed in.

CHECK FUSE TO BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH - NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH AND BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID.IF BRAKE LIGHTS WORKS.YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID OR BAD NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH.MAKE SURE NEUTRAL SWITCH FUSE IS GOOD.

Won't shift

The 95 definately has a BTIS (brake transmission interlock solenoid) It is probably burnt out and not allowing the lever to move out of the way of the shifter. They can be pretty pricy to replace, fortunately you can get the solenoid seperate and not have tobuy the whole shifter. For the time being you can release the shifter by removing a small tab found on the shifter bezel. once you remove this small tab you will be able to fit your key into it and manually release the shifter. Subaru put this for emergency situations, like a dead battery and the tow truck driver needs to get your car into nuetral. You should be able to find detailed instructions in the owners manual under emergency

Transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock. Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal, the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter. The solenoid unlocks the shifter, and you remove it from Park. When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning, however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.
