If it is backfiring, it is likely that the timing belt slipped a notch and needs to be replaced. Backfiring can cause MAJOR DAMAGE to that old engine so please don't drive it if it's backfiring!

To install:
With the tensioner in a slack position, install the Air
Conditioning (A/C) compressor/alternator belt on the pulleys. Slip the
belt over the idler last.
Adjust the drive belt tension.
Install the belt splash shield and right front wheel. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
Lower the vehicle.

Hi Genebaran,
I doubt very much if the steering pump needs replacement, but the drive serpentine belt does. The squealing happens because the belt is slipping on the pump pulley when the pump is under load when the steering is turned to full lock. By the way, don't keep the steering wheel at full lock for longer than a few seconds at a time, as it will place the pump under too much load!
Tell your mechanic to fit a new belt. Advise the mechanic to make a sketch of the routing of the belt before he removes the old one.

Check to see that no bolts or mounting brackets are loose causing the power steering pump to be out of alignment with the rest of the pulleys. When replacing the belt make sure it is seated correctly on the pulley because if it is one ridge off it will cause the belt to shred very quickly.
Check the tension of the belt. On the longest run it should depress about 3/8" with a 20 lb load applied to it. Or you should be able to twist it 90 deg at the longest run without too much effort.
There should be a single serpentine belt setup in that car. You need to
find the springloaded belt tensioner pulley, put the right sized socket
on it, with a long breakerbar or ratchet, and releive the tension from the belt to remove and replace it. There should be a sticker on the fanshroud area, which has the belt routing diagram on it. Good luck.
