Check the fuel pressure. A slight dip in pressure will keep the engine from starting. When is the last time you did a tune up? Even if you are getting some spark you might not have enough. New plugs, wires, distr. cap could solve this problem. Or try a new fuel filter. When diagnosing a car problem always do simple cheap things first, as this usually ends up being the cause.

Well, I certainly cannot help you locate the timing marks, but I should be able to point you in the right direction.
The first thing you will want to look for is a triangle "tooth" or some form of pointing device on the crank wheel. If you find that, then you will know where your timing marks are.
If your vehicle is anything like my old Nissan, you will not be this lucky. The way I found mine was to take a non abrasive cloth and a cleaning agent(Bug and Tar remover works amazingly) and clean off everything around the crank wheel. Once you have methodically done that, use a white non permanent marker all the way round your crank wheel and beside it, then re-attach everything, and remove your spark plugs.
Once your spark plugs are removed, put cylinder one's spark plug into the plug wire to create a connection (its easier this way) and have a buddy crank the car while you aim your timing gun at the white marker you painted with. This worked for be because the timing light gave a sharp contrast to the area and I was able to discern the markers. Make dammed sure you don't have your spark plugs in if you try this method. Bad things happen when you compress all that fuel for a while then that baby fires up.

SOURCE: wont fire up. sounds like it's going to start but just wont turn

Hi,
It could be a couple of things:

  1. The starter motor needs repairing.
  2. The starter relay maybe faulty.
If you can get it to a good Autoelectrician they will definitely find the problem quite quickly. 9 times out of 10 its either the battery is faulty or the starter motor needs repairing. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

6 cyl 2.9. drove to work fine. turned off. 15

all i can say is check for power and ground at the fuel pump. get someone to turn the key to the on position (not crank!) and use a test light to see if you are getting power.

TIMING PROBLEM

I dont think that u have a timing probing but just to be sure I would recheck the timing, (remove timing belt cover, set crank to zero and make sure both cams line up with the marks on the engine) if thats all good the u have a prob with that particular cylinder. first thing I would do is swap the coil pack from cyl 3 with another cylinder (like cyl 1) then start the car if the misfire code goes from P0303 (Cyl 3) to P0301 (Cyl 1) then u know u have a bad coil pack. try that and let me know what happens
