Reset the check engine light by disconecting the negative battery cable for a minute or two then reconect, be aware that that will not fix any problems that have been present prior to this procedure. After running the car for a while the light usually comes back on, check for a code with a code reader and repair the problem to cause the light to stay out.

My 1996 Nissan pickup's check engine light is on. I had it checked and was told that the O2 sensor was bad. I replaced the O2 sensor and the check engine light is still on.

Your light needs to be reset. It doesn't reset automatically. Autozone, Advance, etc parts stores can reset it for you free

Reset check and service engine lights

It's in the console under the coin holder, in front of the gear shifter. You have to remove the coin holder and you will see it.

How do I reset the check engine light on a 1996 Toyota 4runner 4x

Remove the positive battery cable, step on brake for 10 seconds, then reconnect cable. This clears your ECM of the fault code, but will not eliminate the fault (which, will reset and re-light the "check engine" bulb within 50 miles if it is really a defective component).

Resetting the check engine light

On my 2006 you set the odometer to the normal odometer mode using the button on the dash. When you get that setting, hold the button down until the display flashes. Once it begins to flash, let go of the button and then push it again. The light should then go out.
