How to test ECT sensor? 2002 jetta TDI, temperature indicator would go up and down but car was warm and hater output ok

Replace bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. ECT sensor is placed in the right back side of the cylinder head on 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI. See picture below:

I have a 2002 VW Jetta and the temperature gauge keeps going up and down... Is this something to worry about ?

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. ECT sensor is placed in the right back side of the cylinder head on 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI. See picture below:

Temperature gauge location

Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • The coolant to just below the level of the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
    • The air intake duct (1997-1998) gm_mv_ven_ect.gif

    • The ECT sensor electrical connector
    • The ECT sensor
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • P/N 9985253 sealer or equivalent to the threads
    • The sensor
      1. Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) (2001-2005)
      2. Torque to: 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) (1997-2000)
    • The ECT sensor electrical connector
    • The coolant

Need to fing location of ECT sensor on a 1.8L turbo 2004 jetta

Take off the two covers on top of your engine. The ECT sensor should be on your right side of the engine. It may be either black or green and has a 4 blade connector. There is a plastic clip you slide out to replace the sensor. Hope this helps. Only takes a few minutes to replace

Location of the ect sensor

It's just to the drivers side of the valve cover. Attached to the coolant flange under the hose for the PCV. In this pic if it works.
