This just happened on my 2010 Tahoe. The chevy place told me they needed to replace shift cables upper and lower the total will be $775.00. Does anyone think I got ripped??

So did you check linkage on gearbox.Is clutch assembly all working.Is it cable or hydaulics.What lead up to this.History.What gearbox.

96 tahoe has a shift cable goes from shifter through floor to transmission they tend to break to holding tabs on the transmission side have someone shift through the gears and lie underneath to see if shift arm moves of chock the wheels so no one gets run over if the cable tabs are broke the outer cable will move and inner will not this will be visible drivers side underneath just on the other side of the frame rail and probably about as far back as the door mirror

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.
If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

Car only starts in neutral?
I was first going to say the problem is the neutral safety switch, but based on what you said about it being stuck in drive and the shifter can be moved around, I would say the cable is broke or a connector on either end of the cable. The cable connects the shifter with the shift lever on the side of the transmission.
The shift lever is probably under the master cylinder on the driver side.

1991 chevy c1500 manual trans won't shift
Is the clutch working? Will it roll freely when engaged? If so then it probably is just the linkage sync in the top of transmission. Or it is stuck in probably first or third? Not positive how that one is. But there is three movable linkages. 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and R. In order to shift a different one the one your on has to go back to neutral or the other one won't shift. The gearshift probably jumped over to one that won't move. And you have to take it off and set them back to neutral and put it back together.

Or It has broken gears, which would have to be real bad to keep it out of all gears.
