If its dark color it is likely rear main seal on engine. If it is red color it is front seal on transmission. check fluid levels, overfilling engine oil or transmission fluid can cause this also. both require major removal of tyranny etc. If you never done this get qualified help. .
several things, the rear main seal is accessable by removing the transmission. if this vehicle is standard transmission, then would recomend new clutch at this time given the amount of labor involved. if automatic, remove drive shafts, transfer case, transmission, and flexplate ....replace rear main. approx 5 hrs.
To replace the rear main oil seal I would recommend changing the whole rear main plate with gasket seal already done.
1.disconnect battery
2.raise vehicle on hoist
3.remove exhaust
4.remove tail shaft
5.remove starter motor
6.disconnect and remove transmission
7.remove ring gear
8.you will now see rear main assembly.
9.undo bolts holding rear main plate on
10. remove plate and clean surface area, follow these steps in reverse to refit...
The oil filter housing and the timing cover can all be worked on with engine in car. For the rear engine seal (rear main seal), the transfer case and transmission will have to be removed to access the seal. Most of the time, the oil pan can be removed without raising the engine. Check your clearance under there for anything obstructing removal. (I loaned out my Jeep manual and never got it back!) On some cars, engine needs to be raised about 4 inches for pan to clear the oil pickup tube. Don't know about your Jeep.
There are seal drives . you might be able to get one at your local parts store . they may loan or rent this type of tool to you . Just ask them when you buy the seal or the gasket kit .Now to replace the seal you will need to remove the transmission to gain access to the rear main seal
Well sometimes.... the front crankshaft seal is usually called a crank seal, or the front timing cover seal but the rear crank seal is (usually) called the Rear Main crank seal. In order to replace the rear seal , the transmission will need to be removed. If its the front, then the harmonic balancer will be removed. $380 sounds cheap. As you will need a oil seal, oil pan gasket, oil, filter, labor and tax. Maybe even a lower engine mount.
You sure the oil comes from the plug and doesnt just run down from above and drip of it?
Clean aroun the area and take a drive
look again and make sure its not cming from anywhere else. If its the plug, you just need to replace the washer on the plug next time you oil change. do not try to just tighten the plug. If you buist the thread in there that an expensive repair. It should not be very tight as the washer should seal it.
Yes, either pull the trans or pull the engine. No way to get in there with out having one of the two out!
FYI it's very rare for a rear main on that engine to leak, Most all of the time it's the oil pan gasket or coming from higher up like a valve cover or the intake gaskets!
Cool, I didn't want to drop oil pan in vehicle. Thanks!
