I would suggest checking all wire connections to the tranny as there may be water in them causing the fault

How can you tell if a new gearbox is needed other than a Ecu which has been replaced

have the fault codes read first
if the car is moving in limp mode with no obvious noises or problems , replacement of the box is a total last resort
light on the dash and limp mode can be transmission or engine or both but the fault codes will show the problem area
The ECU -- engine control unit or ECM --engine control module gets messages from the transmission control module ---TCM--and that TCM controls solenoids and servos , vss and other items that if faulty will put the car in limp mode
read the fault codes

95 Nissan Maxima transmission code p 07340 p 11005 transmission is in limp mode have erased several times

what have you done to repair the fault that shows the codes?
from your statement you are removing the codes and resetting the ECM but the codes come back and the vehicle goes back into limp mode
one of the codes (p 0734 --0?) refers to gear 4--incorrect ratio===causes --wiring---TR sensor /switch ---shift solenoids---transmission mechanical fault
If that fault area is not fixed then the TCM doesn't know what gear to select so it goes to limp mode

On my 2006 Chrysler 300, the brake light, check engine light and other minor dash lights are on and the transmission won't shift out of 1st gear. Any idea what's going on?

If a car goes into limp mode, its likely something spectacular has gone wrong and the car is protecting itself from major damage. You will probably have to go to a Chrysler Dealer to rectify and get them to clear the fault off the cars computer.

Transmission shifting problem

limp mode is when the engine will not exceed set rpm's to protect the engine and gear box. What you have is a solenoid / servo that is not working properly due to several possible faults.. Check and/ or change the transmission oil. clean the filter. Have the bands and clutch packs adjusted. Have a pressure test done on the box to determine any internal faults . run the fault codes to check for a fault in the TCM

Gear box fault warning light

that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independentshops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.

My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away

Amber gearbox light came on in my 2004 S type Jaguar. After shutting engine down and cooling it started with no light on. So, I limped home. The Q: Now that the light is no longer lit can I drive it? Or,...

you need to have the car scanned for freeze frame data code reading to see what happened at the time of the limp mode...Let me say that at times after heavy rain or even if you wet the fire wall near the throttle body, that can also cause the limp mode coupled with brake, dcs,and gear box fault and engine fault lights etc...You can actually do a hard reset yourself by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 min..Let the car run and take it for a drive to make sure the shift points arent jerky. But have the car scanned and let me know what code comes up.

Transmission will not shift into high gear

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example).
Also note that many problems that show up as transmission issues are actually PCM or electrical, and may be external to the transmission. Try a different PCM, and check for chafing where the cables come out of the PCM.
What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.
No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmision is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck. Check all your fuses first to ensure it's not a simple as that before you take it to a transmission shop. Call around, most transmission shop will scan free of charge to inspect the condition of your transmission.

Cadillac SRX gearbox problems

It sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. Your first gear will never make it to 1st gear, the gear ratio is to low and the engine would over rev causing it to shut down.

Start with the reputable transmission shop that can test your transmission and the reputable ones will do this free of charge and will take there time to explain to you your SRX transmission issues and what actions need to be take to resolve the problem.

Gearbox fault light and cruise not available

The only thing that will cause a cruise control fault is a loose vacuum hose ussually on the breather hose coming from the valve cover in front to the throttle body. As for the remainder, shut off the car and restart to get you home and avoid the limp home mode. That in itself is an electronic fault in the ground system. Check you coils or replace them with a new set of plugs (autolite double platinum recommendes.) Clean any grounds you may have and then start you engine. You will notice there is no problem then. Run a diagnostic tool to see if there is any fault with grounded sensors like the O2 to keep that from happening again. Don't get the tranny replaced cause thats all the dealership wants to do and charge you $5k. Its not the actual cause. Good luck and let us know if there is anything else we can do here at fixya.
