Is the intake valve and the exhaust valve the same? Does it make a difference in the exhaust lifters and the intake lifters if you get them all mixed up when you put them back into the right holes?

The intake and exhaust valves are generally totally different and normally not even the same size. Put the wrong valves in and they won't seat properly which would definitely kill compression. Lifters as long as they are of the exact same dimensions are generally not as big of an issue. If they are different lengths though you could end up with one set of valves that never open with others that never close. Get the timing off as the other poster mentioned and you could have an impact between the cylinder and the valves at which point you could end up replacing the block and heads. Getting the timing teeth perfectly aligned is critical on modern high precision engines.

Exaust intake leaking

It's exhaust manifold. There are two manifolds, the intake manifold in the valley between the cylinder heads, and the exhaust manifolds, one on each side of a v figured engine.

And, yes, a leak in the exhaust or the intake will make it run lean. If the leak is close to the engine, it can do harm to the valves, too. There is a gasket between the exhaust manifold and the engine block. Likewise, there is an intake manifold gasket between the intake manifold and the block.

Code p0400 exhaust recirculation

EGR valve malfunction. The passages beneath the egr valve may be plugged with carbon deposits, restricting or blocking exhaust flow back into the intake. Or the computer control of the vacuum supply to the valve may be compromised. Take the valve off and clean the bottom and the passages, use a new gasket when remounting it. Check operation, valve should raise as warmed engine raises rpm's off idle. Put a finger lightly on the bottom of valve to feel it raise as the throttle is goosed. The valve is closed at idle, but as engine speed increases, valve is raised to allow some exhaust gasses back into the intake.

Setting the valve lash on a Chevy small block 305

Rotate the motor clockwise to #1 TDC on the firing stroke. (both valves will not move as the piston is coming up.)

If its not already loose, loosen the nut. Turn the nut while twisting the pushrod between your fingers. When you feel resistance its at zero lash (if you have strong fingers, dont force it). Turn the nut 1 full turn.

Do Exhaust valves cylinders 1,3,4 and 8 and Intake valves 1,2,5, and 7.

Rotate the motor one full turn and do Exhaust 2,5,6 and 7 and Intake 3,4,6 and 8.

Which side of the motor on a 3.1 buick 1998 century is the intake side and the exhaust side. I'm installing push rod that are different lenghts and call for exact positioning on the intake side as well...

That is a V6 or V8 standard mounted engine. When they say intake side and exhaust side they are talking about the valves. Typically each cylinder has 2 valves the front valve is the intake the back valve is the exhaust.If you haven't already gotten it I highly recommend you get the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual from your vehicle so you have the adjustment specs or priming procedure if you have hydraulic lifters.

How to ajust valves 94 2.4

Set the engine to TDC (Top Dead Center) on Cylinder #1. (There should be a groove on the crankshaft pulley, line this up with "0" on the timing guide. Check to make sure that the rocker arms on cylinder 1 are loose, and that the ones on cylinder 4 are tight. If the reverse is true then turn the crankshaft 1 full turn lining the mark up again and recheck)

The clearances are:

Intake: 0.20mm (0.008inch)
Exhaust: 0.30mm (0.012inch)

Then adjust the following valves as indicated with an "X"
X--X--0--0 : Intake Valves
X--0--X--0 : Exhaust Valves

Turn the Crankshaft 1 full revolution lining up the mark on the pulley with the 0 timing mark again and adjust the remaining valves

0--0--X--X : Intake Valves
0X--X--0--X : Exhaust Valves

Corolla 1.6 VVTI motor the 3ZZFE motor: the timing marks are on TDC as well as cam timing as manual illustrated - on which piston will the inlet valve open and exhausted valve open?

With engine Crankshaft on TDC and cam timing set correctly this is the position where No. 1 cylinder is firing at the start of the power stroke. At this point No. 4 cylinder is also at TDC but is just at the end of the exhaust stroke and starting the intake stroke so the exhaust valve will be almost finished closing and the inlet valve will just be starting to open. This is referred to as the inlet and exhaust valves rocking.

Hot do you take off a 98 GMC 5.7 vortec intake

Note, removing the upper intake manifold is not necessary when removing lower intake manifold, they are removed as an assembly.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly and inlet duct. Mark and remove distributor. Remove upper radiator hose at thermostat housing. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables. Remove heater hoses from intake manifold. Remove EGR pipe.
Disconnect fuel lines at rear of engine. Remove AC compressor and set aside(leave hoses connected). Remove canister purge solenoid. Disconnect theSCPI injector, ignition coil, Ignition Control Module, generator,IAC motor, TP sensor, O2 sensor, Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and Engine Coolant Temperature sensor wiring harness connectors. Remove PCV valve and hose. Remove lower intake manifold bolts. Remove lower intake manifold.
Installation.
Always use New O-rings when reconnecting fuel lines at rear of engine. Apply a bead of RTV silicone sealer along the front and rear sealing surfaces of the block.See Fig.6. Install new gaskets and intake manifold on block while RTV is still wet to the touch. Use Threadlock 12345382 or equivalent to lower intake manifold bolts. Tighten lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to specification table. See fig. 7. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.f52665d.gifabc2b5f.gif
