Austin, Hondas have a fuel inaccuracy problem that is will documented. The problem is usually the fuel sending unit. This is not something usually replaced by a DIY mechanic. The Haynes Manual for your car may give you instructions on exactly how to do it safely. The wiring for the fuel sending unit goes into the rear of the dashboard and any number of wires may fail. Hondas are notorious for this problem. If the fuel sendor doesn't fix your problem, you will probably have to live with it.

Overfilling your gas tank is not a good thing to do. You see, there is a carbon canister that is supposed to filter the air space that is taken up by the gas as you fill up. It's purpose is to remove evaporative emissions and reduce air pollution. If your car is backfiring, it usually means that your car's engine is running rich... getting too much fuel. I would check your EGR as the ECU has the additional air from the EGR factored in to burn cleanly. If the EGR is faulty and doesn't allow the extra air to get into the combustion chamber, the engine will run rich and backfire. Replacing the distributor cap and rotor, and OEM type spark plugs every two years isn't a bad thing to do. Using long-life DENSO Iridium plugs is a better option for plugs. There is also one of two Oxygen sensors screwed into your exhaust pipe to help adjust mixture with the car's computer (ECU)... these may also require replacing with new ones made by the OEM (DENSO is the OEM). The first thing you need to consider is buying a fault code reader and a Haynes manual for your car. The fault code reader will help you narrow down exactly what may be the problems. Look in the emission control section of the manual to tell you what the fault code numbers mean. Basic fault code readers aren't expensive.

SOURCE: gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.

SOURCE: The fuel gauge doesn't read right, makin' low fuel light flash

if the fuel pump is all in-tank; the sending unit built in to the fuel pump is most likely malfunctioning; if so, this will require removal and replacement of the entire fuel pump, sometimes expensive, others not so much

SOURCE: Gas tank will not switch and gas runs out of fuel

Hello tlsnyder52: My name is Roger and I will help you. The problem you have is in the fuel select valve. This was a factory recall a few years ago. The recall number is 91S39.What happens is the valve sticks when you switched tanks. This returns all unburnt fuel to the tank you are not using. Basically fills the other tank while the one you are using goes empty. When you fill both tanks the returned fuel has nowhere to go. The fuel has to go somewhere and pushes out the vent. This is not a hard valve to replace. But I would check as if the recall was not performed it may be under warranty recall. The service kit number is F1UZ9B263B and can be obtained from a Ford dealer. Should You need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Fuel Gauge wont move past 3/4 tank even with full tank

There is no easy fix.
Either the gauge on the dash is faulty, or the sending unit in the tank.
The sending unit uses a float which may be getting stuck at the 3/4 mark.

1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes
