Security system will not let me start my cadillac for 3 minutes. Then, it will let me start it. It does this most of the time when I try to start my car.

Put new key and cylinder in 1997 seville, lost ones that came with it.it will not start, something about security disabled. dealer never said it would be a problem.

Is the security light lit ? Car an pad lock symbol . If any of these are lit it is the anti-theft system . Does the engine crank over but won't start an run ? The anti-theft system will allow the engine to crank but not start , disables fuel injectors . If the anti-theft light is lit there are DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes stored in the theft deterrent module an or the ECM .
Does anything happen when you turn the key to the start position ?
Many reasons why a Cadillac security system activates, and the procedure to reset it can get very complicated. You can try disconnecting the battery (negative cable only) for a couple of minutes and then reconnect to see if the problem goes away. If not, you will need to have a GM dealer reset it.
check out this link. It will help you understand the system. There is a section on this link called "quick fix". It describes a 10 minute trick. Perform this trick 3 times in a row without trying to start the car in between. Turning the key back to the off position after each ten minute cycle. This is a complete passkey reset. After the 3 rd time, turn back the key and then turn it forward and try to start it. The whole process will take around a half hour. If this doesn't work, you'll need to take it to a dealer. try this PASSKEY LOCKOUTRESET GM CARS 1999 UP 1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.
