Why does the voltage go down & all warning dash lights come on when I turn on headlights & heater in my 2001 cavalier?

i actually just did this a couple days ago, this takes about 20 minutes and a little bit of patience. When you pop your hood you will see a protective piece of plastic over the headlights/radiator, you firstly have to remove the plastic clips holding that piece then pull that piece of plastic off, once done u will see 2 bolts holding each headlight in place, i believe it is a 9/16 socket but if not just find the one that fits, remove the 4 bolts (2 for each headlight) and pull the headlight in an up and outwards manor. if you feel any resistance do not yank look at why it is catching and clear it, then it should just pop out (the headlight and the corner piece and clipped together so dont pull it too far out) then when the bulb is accessible pull the old bulb, put the new bulb in and voila place the headlight back into position, redo the 4 bolts holding the headlights and re-attach the plastic headlight/radiator cover. Enjoy the new lights

MAKE SURE THAT THE DIMMER SWITCH IS NOT TURNED ALL THE WAY DOWN. IF IT CHECKS OUT, THEN CHECK THE FUSE FOR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS. IT SHOULD BE UNDER THE DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVERS' SIDE OR TO THE LEFT OF THE AIR DUCT NEAR THE DOOR HINGE. HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. check your headlights relay switch, dont buy a new one, go to a junk yard and pick one up for next to nothing if need to replace. its very common for europeans and germans car to have wiring problems. hope that help some..good luck

the battery says 12 volts but may be dropping to 4 or 5 under a load...i would suggest jumpstarting the car and see what happens.the battery should read in the high 12 volts and not less than 9.5 under cranking. the dash lights go out on your car when starting,and the alarm will go off ,and disable the ignition if the voltage is too low in cranking the car because the computer will shut it down and activate the anti theft.....check your battery posts are tight. best of luck

htere is a harness connectionunder the battery tray that corrodes, unpllug it and then check for continuaty from there to lights, it is time consuming but these wires are prone to corrosion
