IHAVE a 2006 vw passat the gear shift knob on left side is stuck in and won't come out of drive. It will go in neutral, but not reverse or park. What is wrong?

They usually stick in Park!

It sounds to me that your linkage on the transmission is out of adjustment. If it is as you described, then Neutral should be park. To fix this problem, you need to shift the car all the way into park, (set your parking break. Add wheel chalks if possible.) Locate the shifter linkage on the transmission,(either under the hood, or under the car) loosen the lock screw/s on the linkage. move the linkage on the transmission either direction.(you should feel the clicks of the gears) Park gear, is typically all the way opposite the direction the linkage is inserted. Click the selector all the way until it stops rotating. Then tighten the screw/s. Try your shifter now, you should feel the gears click smoothly into place. Hope this helps.

could be a selector failure. easiest to check first or internall drama with torqu converter ,one way clutch or other. these will require r@r n overhaul

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

Same thing happened to me today(but while in drive!). had to crawl UNDER vehicle, driver side, behind the transmission where it narrows down, and the shifting rod (connected to your shifter in vehicle) came disconnected from what i assume was a gear knob on transmission. its basically a screw and nut holding the two together. ill temporarily replace it tomorrow until i can order correct screw and nut. hope this is same situation and helps. easy fix.

ps if you push the gear -knob all the way forwards under vehicle, that is in the Park gear.

check gear shift cable adjustment correct. loosen cable securing bolts at gearbox, make sure gearbox is in park. put gear selector lever in park and re tighten bolts at g/box. if this does not solve the problem, multi function switch on g/box could be faulty.
