Hi all , I'm driving an automatic trans Mazda 6 year 2004. How come I can switch my gear from neutral/D to REVERSE/L (first gear) without pressing the safety lock button on the gear knob? The shift lock button required if I switch from/to PARK. (I know this is normal). Is that something wrong?

You should definitely have to push th button to get from forward to reverse. If not the gate at the base of shifter has broken and will need to be replaced

SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

SOURCE: elantra automatic trans problems

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Hi, I have a 2008 Mazda CX-7 and it intermittently won't start or crank. Even with a boost, or with the physical key.

If it has an automatic trans check Park-Neutral switch, if it's a manual trans check the Clutch-Neutral switch on the pedal

Jimny suzuki not engaging, seems neutral always. What seems to be the problem?

welcome to usa forum, we dont have Jimny here.
but car is kind simular to a vitara.
no year stated, so that makes real accurate answers impossible.
no transmission stated. or engine size

is it a stick or auto trans?
is car 2wd or 4wd?

is the lever stuck in nutural.?
or is the lever working right but the transmission fails in all gears and reverse.
mine has stick and 5 speeds, and reverse so has 6 gears to try.
If an automatic? trans. check the levels. per the operators guide do not guess.
and change its filter, if never done.
if automatic, make sure the lever moves its cable and the other end of cable is still attached to the trans lever. on the box.
they both move same amount, (cable drive does that)
if not the cable is bad, or bits there.

Occaisionally won't sat, get a single click. can rool car backwards and throw into reverse and then will turn over. is this the starter relay going bad.

When you have an automatic trans, rolling the vehicle in gear does nothing to the engine. The engine has to be running to make the trans pump produce pressure to engage the clutches.
It's possible moving the shifter is what is making the starter work.
I would check the neutral safety switch circuit.

Car acts like its in neutral when I put it into drive or reverse.

assuming you have checked the trans oil and it is full, it sounds like you need to take it to a good trans shop and have it looked at. it could be something simple or something major and expensive

My Mazda 626 Wont go into Drive

Sounds like you have lost the transmission. There are bands that clamp down to lock the transmission into the gear you want. They are controlled by a hydrolic unit located in the trans. The first thing I would do is have a shop pull the trans oil pan and see if it is full of chips of metal. If so you definately have a problem. At the same time they can look at the bands and see if one of them is broken. another cause would be that metal has gotten into the hydrolic valve body and frozen the drive band portion so it will not function. You may also get lucky and have it be an internal adjustment of the drive band. Good Luck, RAC

Chevy avalanche transmission problems

Hello;
Are you getting the check engine light? If so the electronics may have gone out. You may not need a rebuild but you won't know till you pull the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the contents. You may also have lost the neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Check those out first and let me know what codes you get.
For Ponchoboy; the clunking and hissing you hear are teminal root causes. Drop the oil pan and if it has a lot of filings and metal it is time for a rebuild.
Hope this helps; Rate me highly;
